‘Tire maintenance reduces fuel costs

PROPER MAINTENANCE of
tires and wheel alignment can
reduce vehicle operating costs,
advises the Car Care Council of
the Automotive Industries
Association of Canada.

For example, tires underinflated
by only ¢cight pounds can reduce
gas mileage by five per cent and

cut tire life by 25 per cent or
more. Cost-conscious motorists,
suggests Car Care Canada, will
check tire inflation frequently with
their own gauges, available in
most automative stares tor less
than five dollars.

Owners also should check tires
for abnormal wear when vehicles

Car Care Canada points out
there are two easy ways to detect
incorrect alignment of fire
balance, indicating the need for
cost-saving wheel and front-end

J} Looseness or excessive play
in steering, or difficulty in con-
trolling the vehicle over bumps
and around curves are indications
of problems which need correc-
ting.

sligiaest shimmy.

When vehicles are on the hoist,
they should be checked for front
end and steering looseness, and
shock absorber leakage.

A good mechanic can determine
the corrective measures needed for

steering and suspension systems...
or advise that ball joints, steering
linkage and shock absorbers still
arg dependable, but wearing to the
point where replacement would be
advisable in the near future.

If parts replacement is recom-
mended, Car Care Canada advises
against shortcuts in quality of
parts, extent of service and cut-
rate estimates. Insufficient service
to save a few dollars can mean
much higher futuce cepair bills as
a result of the penny-wise philos-
ophy.

Caseful attention to steering,
suspension and tires are among
the major considerations to keep
vehicle maintenance costs low.

Clean fuel system

WHETHER A car uses fuel injec-
tion or a carburetor to deliver the
essential air and gasoline mixture
to the engine, dirt in these fuel
delivery systems can cause hesita-
tion, stalling and rough running.

These performance problems
can be caused by deposits in fuel
injectors or carburetors which in-
terfere with the flow of gasoline.
A mechanic can clean the fuel
delivery system.

Car owners can also quickly
and inexpensively clean deposits
with fuel additives formulated to
clean both fuel injectors and car-
buretors.

Power-robbing deposits in fuel

ped with fuel injection systems.

To clean dirty injectors, car
owners should use a fuel injector
