Crash sends
four teens to LGH

FOUR WEST Vancouver Secondary Schoo) students were sent to
Lions Gate Hospital with undetermined injuries Monday after-
noon when the van they were driving struck a stationary ce-
ment mixer truck.

According to a West Vancouver Police spokesman (he cement

the left, hit the truck and rolled over.

Ready began meeting both sides separately on Tuesday moruing
and is booked for two weeks.

Jacobsen said if Ready is unable to mediate a se<tlement be-
tween BC Rail and the Council of Trade Unions (CTU), which
represents about 1,700 unionized BC Rail workers, Ready will
make recommendations to him on how to end the strike.

BC Rail spokesman Earrie Wall said the company was giad to
have Ready involved in the labor dispute, which centres around
the issues of wages and coniracting out wf work.

“There certainly are difficult issues facing Vince Ready, but
he’s one of the best there is and we're certainly giad to have
him,”’ said Wall. ‘‘We were not getting anywhere as things were.
We're happy something is happening.”’

Vancouver mediator John Thorne, who had originally been
appointed to mediate a settlement at BC Rail, booked out of the
negotiations after only three days. At the time he said there was
nothing to mediate as long as the two sides remained as far apart
on the issues as they were.

Name withheld
in roadblock death

NORTH VANCOUVER RCMP are still not releasing the name of
adriver whose truck struck and killed a Burrard Indian Band
member Sept. 9.

A police spokesman said the name is being withheld ‘because
of possible problems with the aboriginals.’’

Dotlarton Highway resident Murray ‘‘Moe’’ Guss, 28, died
while attempting to enforce an impromptu roadblock of Dollarton
Highway. The action, according to Chief Len George, was initi-
ated to stop cars speeding through the band’s reserve.

Poiice say alcohol has been ruled out as a factor in the case of
the driver. But alcohol has not been ruled out as a factor in the
actions of the deceased.

Meanwhile the investigation continues and potice are looking at
possible charges.

Coroner Ian Marshall expects an inquiry into the death to be
completed within a month. According to Marshall, Guss died in-
stantly as a result of a head injury sustained when he was hit.

The North Shore’s naturally
acidic water was also identified as
a problem in the report. Such
acidity corrodes pipes and faucets,
causing concentrations of copper
and lead to leach into the drinking
water.

The report’s three-phase plan to
upgrade the GVWD system in-
cludes:

eA facility to transfer Coquitlam
water, which suffers far less from
turbidity than does water from the
Capilano or Seymour reservoirs,
to the west to reduce chronic
water turbidity.

*The first phase would also in-
chide the installation of large

and Coquitlam to protect against
giardia and bacteria.

At a cost of $92.5 million, the
firs’ phase would bring com-
pliance with water standards
possibly to 85 per cent.
eThe construction of a filtration
plant at Seymour reservoir to
reduce turbidity entering the

Completion of the second phases
would result in an estimated 95
per cent compliance with water
standards at an overall cost of up
to $278.5 million.
