NORTH VANCOUVER’S Rumi
Merali was the top Canadian to
place in the North American
Telemark ski championships this
month in Heavenly Valley, Calif.

Twenty-six-year-old Kenyan-
born Merali finished tenth overall
out of approximately 200 racers.

Telemark racing, which consists
of a head-to-head dual slalom, is
to be featured as an exhibition
sport in the 1994 Winter Olympics.

NV skier places 10th

Rumi, a former Carson Graham
student, and resident instructor
and coach at Blackcomb Moun-
tain, has raced in Scandinavia,
France, Spain, Chile and Australia
in the last four years.

In 1987 he became the British
Open Telemark ski champion in
Aviemore, Scotland. He has also
taught in South America at El
Colorado Farellones near Santiago
and at Thredbo ski resort in New
South Wales, Australia.

THE PEPSI Celebrity Ski Weekend at Whistler Village saw celebrities
competing in a quad slalom race on Saturday at Whistler Mountain and
in a suitcase race on Blackcomb Mountein on Sunday. A bleck tie celeb-
rity bal! was held on Friday evening to reise dollars for the Startight
