® get this straight ¢ YOU DON'T have to be a religious fanatic to recognize that the Cross is the Christian symbol of culture and sacrifice. Bat the day is not far off when it will have to be hidden, lest some minority group objects to it. That has already hap- pened, in fact. The Federal Department of Veterans Affairs has agreed not to use the cross in its Remembrance Day displays. Why? Because two Jews employed by Public Works Canada objected to its presence in a Public Works building. Two Jews! Not even three! It is ‘‘anti-Semitic’’ to mention Jews at all in any critical context, one Anglican minister in Ontario. Wimpland! 1 was going to use this item on Nov. 11, but it is not a good idea to send the old blood pressure through the roof on a day that still means something to some of us. How about taking down all those crosses in Flanders Fieids, and at Dieppe, Hong Kong, etc.? “FI. ow about taking down all those crosses in Flanders Fields, and at Dieppe, Hong Kong, etc? We wouldn’t want to offend anyone, would we!?’’ but I’ll have to run that risk. My source is Canadian Press, =o they can come with me if some pro- fessor complains to the press council. Actually, | am not getting at the Jews, even though the Canadian Jewish Congress supported this outrage. I’m getting at Ottawa’s gutlessness in once again capitulating to a pressure group. Veterans’ Affairs spokesman Barbara Campbell was reported as saying, following the protest, that the government prefers to use non-denorninational symbols and that the display of a cross in a fed- eral building on Remembrance Day was an error. Don’t tell me that we are not mad. And don’t tell me there are no limits to our spinelessness. Editorial pundits have not damned this piece of cowardice. The only objection has come from We wouldn’t want to offend anyone, would we!? eae Further intelligence from Bonkersland. You would think, would you not, that if a man went into some- one’s house with a loaded gun and killed another man with it, he would be guilty of something, no matter what the circumstances. Not so. According to press reports, Kevin Brewer barged into William James’s house a year ago, for what purpose is not clear. In any event, James hit him with a hammer and broke his nose. Brewer ‘‘stepped out the back door, turned around, and deliber- ately shot the (widow’s) husband, a father of two."’ Such, at any rate, was the widow’s evidence. The killer said he was acting in self-defence. The jury agreed and acquitted him of second-degree murder. According to the report, Brewer has a lengthy criminal record that includes ‘‘numerous thefts and robberies with violence.”’ Again ! ask you: have we all gone mad? On the way out of court, Brewer yelled, ‘‘lt’s Miller time.'’ For him, perhaps, but not for his vic- tim. Citizens United for Safety and Justice is up in arm. about this and is asking the Crown to appeal. aee Here’s another cheering item, this time from Discovery Maga- zine. It involves a 74-year-old Chilean immigrant who has been in this country only since 1981 and wants to be paid the full old-age pension. The old age security laws stipu- jate that a person must be in Canada for 10 years before getting any part of the pension, and 40 years before getting the full whack. Rightly so, or we’d be even more broke than we are, given the way we take in any bum who knocks on our door. Mr. Abraham Waissbluth, how- ever, thinks those laws discriminate against him. ‘‘] war a lawyer in Chile,’’ he stated. ‘‘I read the rules and concluded I have the right to a pension here.”” He is attempting to strike down the Old Age Security Act on the grounds that it violates the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. And he will probably succeed, seeing as how stupid we are. I think [ will apply for a pension for my four-year-old grandson. Isn’t he being discriminated against, too? @ 9 - Friday, November "ON NOVEMBER ELECT 18, 1988 - North Shore News 19, 7 TOM REID WEST VANCOUVER ALDERMAN Experience and Credibility REID, Thomas H. On.
