News finishes 5th in softball tournament THE NORTH Shore News mixed orthodox softball team played to a fifth-place playoff finish after be- ing eliminated 11-3 by Perryscope Productions. In earlier action in the 16-team Vancouver Media League, the News topped second-place CFOX 15-8, but lost a close 7-6 match to opponent CKWX., In the league final, The Province beat defending champ 7-Eleven 16-7 and 26-13 to capture the top spot and become the new league champion. Before starting the playoff, the News played to fifth-place finish out of 64 teams in the 10th annual Richmond Centaurs Mixed Soft- ball Tournament. The News started off the weekend-long tournament by play- ing Jerry’s Cove of Vancouver and soundly defeating them in an easy 14-2 game. In its second games, the News squad took on the Spirits who fell in another easy game — this time 17-4 — to make the overall News record 2-0. Facing three opponents the next day the News first took on the Galaxie Sign Sluggers, with the game going into a tie-breaker with the game at 8-8. After one Sluggers run, the News came to bat. With two out and the bases loaded Diane Materi of the News punched a single into tight field to score two runs to enable the News to triumph 10-9. Next the News downed the Blacksox 12-4. Playing eventual tournament champion the Weldpro Giants, the News got off to a good start scor- ing two runs in the first inning, but could only score one more nun, losing a 4-3 squeaker. On the next day of play, the News would keep playing as long as the team kept winning. The News defeated the Hooters 10-1 to advance against the White Spots Legends. White Spot jumped out to a 6-2 lead, but the News battled back in the sixth inning scoring three runs to make the score 7-5 for White Spot going to the final inning. Back-to-back doubles by Garry Crosstey and Ray Wilby and a sac- tifice bunt by Materi gave the News a 8-7 lead going into the final bats for White Spot.
