Big Brother sought for Father's Day FATHER’S DAY isn’t much of a holiday for at least one nine-year- old in North Vancouver. It just emphasizes what he misses all year around. Living alone with his mother, NINE-YEAR-OLD Mathew of North Vancouver is seeking a Big Brother. Mathew has many interests: swimming, hiking, soccer, movies, museums and more. He is a nor- mal child with a great sense of humor, who likes playing with his friends. But unlike most of them, Mathew doesn't have a dad. Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver is ~ trying to find someone to give him the adult male companionship he needs — but it isn’t easy. Not many men volunteer to become big brothers; more than 100 other seven to 12-year-olds are on the active waiting list, and dozens more are in line to be wait- listed. It doesn't take much to be a big brother, just a few hours a week of being a friend, and the United Way agency provides support ser- vices. Most big brothers say it isn’t a chore, that they get as much out of the relationship as their little brothers. Mathew- wants to: find out what it’s like. How about you? For information on becoming a big brother to Mathew or another boy, call 434-1411 today.
