THIRTEEN WOMEN on the North- Shore have been nominated -for the YWCA’S 1986 Women of Distinction Awards. ~ By KIM PEMBERTO : News Reporter -YWCA public relations director Louise Donovan said a total of 76 women, who have worked to make Vancouver a. better place to live, have been nominated for the third annual awards. “This is a way for the whole community to recognize women's achievements,’’ said Donovan. “The-nature of the YWCA is to encourage women’s achievements, so the awards are an extension of our goals.”’ Donovan said more than 1,000 letters were sent to various com- munity groups, individuals and businesses !ast November re- ‘questing nominations for the May 29 Awards. She said there will be seven categories this’--year, .unlike previous years, where there were six. ‘The new category . is for en-. . trepreneurs and innovators. The others are Arts and Culture, Communications and Public Af- fairs, Community ‘and Humanitarian Service, Health and . Education, Management and the Professions and Sports, Recreation and Fitness. Nominated for the Arts and Culture category is local Jean Coulthard, active in the field of music composition for almost 70 years. 230 East Esplanade North Vancouver In the Communications and Public Affairs category the local nominees include North Van- couver District Mayor Marilyn Baker, Noranda public relations supervisior Elizabeth Ann O'Keefe and CBC television executive pro- ducer Helen Slinger. Nominated for Community and Humanitarian Service are Grace Boyle, a volunteer for the Mount Pleasant Young Disabled Adults Program; Norrie Lawlor, a volun- teer with many community organizations; and Margaret Mor- fitt, who has worked for the North Shore Association for the Mentally | ‘Handicapped. Nominated in the En- trepreneur-Innovator category is Christine Morton Farris, owner of Christine and Company, known internationally for its fashions. Sarada Devi, a local yoga teach- er, has been nominated for the Health and Education ‘category. Geri Powell, who works in the area of rehabilitation of the handi- capped,-has also been nominated in this category. North Vancouver District Mayor . Baker and Geri Powell have also — been nominated in the Manage- ment and the Professions category, along with Enid M. Dearing, the chief librarian at North Vancouver District Library. In the Sports, Recreation and Fitness category the local nominees are Shirley Carter, a health and fitness consultant: with Kinesiatrics; and Geri Fitch, area recreation coordinator with North Vancouver Recreation Commis- sion.
