Youth’s death ruled accidental A CORONER’S inquiry into the death of a North Van- couver youth has found his death by botulism unnatural and accidental. The results of the inquiry were released Wednesday. The 15-year-old North Vancouver resident died Oc- tober 29, about 34 hours after cating non-commercial smoked salmon. The salmon, according to the report, had been produc- ed by the family of a friend. Coroner lan Marshall, in his report, recommends that the B.C. College of Physi- cians and Surgeons issue a newsletter to all physicians in the province listing the clincal symptoms associated with botulism. He also calls on the provin- cial health department to consider holding public education seminars to alert the public to the dangers of botulism. Concern over botulism has been growing because of a number of deaths in the pro- vince throughout 1983. AS - Sunday, January 22, 1984 - North Shore News NORTH SHORE residents and visitors to local ski- ing areas have lost almost $24,000 worth of ski equipment to thieves since the start of the season, according to North Vancouver RCMP. ' By NEWS STAFF Police here have logged 75 reports of ski theft since the end of November, 1983, and the value of the missing equipment has been set at * $23,900. The majority of the thefts — 36 — have taken place at Grouse Mountain with a fur- ther 26 at Seymour. The remaining 12 have oc- cured away from the moun- tains with the greatest number of those, incidents where skis have been remov- ed from cars parked outside restaurants and pubs. RCMP in North Van- couver are cautioning skiers to take care when they’re tak- ing to the powder. - Don’t leave skis unattend- ed and use provided locks, or locking devices that can be purchased, to keep them secure. Police also say not to rely on the locks provided -with car-top ‘ski racks. ‘*We’ve had _ incidents where the thieves have just pried the rain gutters off the car and taken away the whole roof rack,’ says Cst. Rod Booth. _ Further protection is of- fered through the RCMP’s Ski Watch program, where skis and equipment are engraved with the owner’s drivers licence. The presence of the engraved number, says police, may deter thieves from taking your skis. If it doesn’t, the number will at least aid in identifying the skis if they are recovered. Skis can be engraved at the North Vancouver RCMP of- fice. As well, members of the Grouse Volunteer Ski Patrol provide the service on weekends and members of the RCMP are often at ski areas with engravers. ECURE YO HOME TODAY.
