8 mailbox A7 - Sunday, March 20, 1983 - North Shore News is it foo late for Sager's pub? Dear Editor: A few months ago my husband and I stopped to look, read and then listen to — by Mr. Sager himself — the proposed new use for his lovely, old building on Marine Drive in West Vancouver. We then signed his petition. A village pub to visit some evenings - a tea shop night in the village, we thought — how wonderful. We are not “joiners”, we like to be able to “drop in”. Sorry to sound ungrateful, but clubs, recreation cen- tres, noisy amplified music with a drink or bite to eat, shatter us — so where is there for us to socialize? I would like to point out that most pubs in Britain owe their charm to one most important fact — they are run by husband and wife team, so that it is more of a Sorenson forced union Dear Editor: After reading your editorial of March 13, 1 feel compelled to .add my voice in support of the action taken by CUPE local 389. By udvocating wage reductions and or lay-offs of CUPE home atmosphere. One doesn’t go there simply to guzzle, then stagger out — but to enter assured of a greeting and a “how are you” by people. who care. Meals are now also served there, such an improvement — drinking on an empty stomach is also another reason to condemn the “old” pub idea — food should always be available at the beginning of any get- together. If one of the “regulars” is missing more than once, someone is bound to wonder why — and go by their home to find out why. A shopping tnp on foot provides a reason to go out, get exercise and fresh air, and what a treat to be able to go in somewhere for a sit, a “cuppa” (cup of tea or coffee), with the added pleasure of possibly meeting members Mr. Sorensen should bear the respon- sibility for the reaction of CUPE. The union was forced by Mr. Sorensen, in face of those threats, to do whatever was legally within their means to protect. their friends, certainly a member of the regular staff. We are all so disappointed by the constant changes of staff “one had just got used to”. We believe Mr.-and Mrs. Sager's idea was the answer tO many, many important things missing nowadays — much more than just a dream — is it really too late? Thank you both so much for trying so sincerely on our behalf and the many other people who had dared to hope. If this idea has been th- warted, one wonders, for what?? Thank you for your at- tention. M. Rachel West Vancouver Dear Editor: I cannot let the decision by council to refuse to allow Mr. Sager to open a pub pass to_act. members. I wonder if a private company undertook similar action that such strident cries of morality would be raised. Dan Morten __ North Vancouver Avoid taxes, create jobs FROM PAGE A6 and other unreported ac- tivity because it does, after all, create jobs. In Canada at the moment the income tax forms provide for the reporting of the name and address of the individuals to whom child care allowances have been paid. Presumably that ts to authenticate the income tax deduction for child care expenses But 1 won't take the tax department long to reahze that such information and more could be used to advantage in tracking down the subterraneans in the underground economy t wonder if tattletaling on the cleaning lady is the way of the future! I am surprised, to say the very least, that the council should have been swayed by highly specious, emotional arguments that were presented by a _ vocal minority. The decision displayed a disappointing lack of maturity in a sophisticated community. Careful control of opening hours and a dress rule under a responsible management would ensure a harmonious and relaxed meeting place that would be a credit to the community. I might add that I am a non-drinker but would welcome the opportunity to meet friends and colleagues in an atmosphere such as Mr. Sager had envisioned. Dr. Robert C.
