‘They’ re lucky | to have jobs’ Alderman wants pay cuts at City hall ALDERMAN Bill Sorenson wants North Vancouver City em- ployees to be officially informed by council that they are lucky to have jobs. Sorenson, who is urging them to forget about pay raises, is putting his money where his mouth 1s and is asking for his own pay as an alderman to be cut. Just how popular this will turn out to be with = his colleagues on council is uncertain. For, Sorenson wants all of them - including Mayor Jack Loucks - to do the same thing. He is) asking council members to set an example by having their — salaries rolled back to pre-198] levels and hopes all City employees will follow in. His motion, to cul the mayor's salary from $20,700 to $18,000 and aldermen's By CHRIS LLOYD supends to $6,000 from their present $6,900, will be in- troduced at tomorrow evening's council meeting. Sorenson, who is manager of operations with the North Shore Community Credit Union, says he considers such sacrifices necessary when the municipality has reached a financial crunch with a combination of in- creased demand for services and dechning revenues. In an open letter he has sent to the News, he says “that if staff reductions are te be kept to a minimum while council holds the line on taxes, we must look to all City staff to be responsible in salary demands”. The alderman threatens that unless staff forget about any pay increases they will be hit by layoffs. “T would lke to suggest to staff that they not only forget about any further salary increases in 1983 but that they also agree to forego any increments due this year. The increments alone will force staff cuts and increases in salary costs will result in layoffs and further pressure on our ability to delivery essential services,” he says. The official wording of his submitted motion = asks council to resolve the council of the City of North Vancouver point ont to all employees that they should be thankful they have yobs and a= good benefit package at. a time when many of their counterparts in private industry are not so fortunate. and = challenge CUPE, fire fighters and exempt staff to take some responsible initiative in this regard”. The second part of his motion specifies that supends should be cut to $6,000 for aldermen = and $18,000 for the mayor “to set an example of our deter- mination to matntain essential services but hold the line with taxes”.
