Although hardly new, Montessori daycares and primary schools are becoming increasingly popular. And im these times of rapidly declining enrollment on the North Shore, Gatehouse Montessori in Cedardale School is doing a thriving business and planning to expand. Billed as a “viable private school alternative” the school costs about $200 per month. Gatehouse, which has been operating in West Vancouver for three years takes children three to six years old. ‘But, now the children who began three years ago are ready to progress to primary school, so their parents have begun North West Mon- tessori, a separate organization which has hired a trained Montessori teacher to take a split grades one to three class. “Our youngsters have had three just superb years of education’ says Rita Paragras, a speech therapist, and gne of the parents who didn't{want their chidren to have any other education. The response to their $13 50 $23.50 $39 50 ‘Rative to the public school system. By NANCY WEATHERLEY association has been very favorable, says Paragas, from West Van schoolboard trustees to private funding sources. In spite of the bad economy, North West Montessori hopes to keep the school open to all levels by setting up bursaries. They don’t want to be labelled “elitist” Paragas states. Much of the Montessori learning system is based on learnmg by doing. allowing each child to discover concepts through empirical experience. And to this end, many of the games and learning tools attempt to give concrete Significance to abstract ideas. For instance, fractions are learned through fitting different sized pieces | continue to gro together. Thus a child can learn by experience that two quarters or three sixths fill up a half. There is less discipline in this system, children are freer to talk to one another during the day and the emphasis is placed on the individual. The Montessori child has the same teacher for about three years for every sub- ject. According to the programme outline, “Learning is more thematic than departmentalized into subject areas” because of this method of teaching. So that a lesson on parallel geometry might be followed by a study of leaf venation, and then a study of the earth, sun and parallel light rays. The elementary program is designed to move from a physical accumulation of facts to creative growth. There are still a few spaces open for September, anyone interested in registration can phone 986-5754.
