Boating is a sport you can ‘get into for so many reasons: to keep in shape, to relax, to feel the excitement of speed and wind, to develop self- confidence, or simply to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. But, according to the Allicd Boating Association of Canada, there are still too many women who shy away from boating. Un- fortunately, in many cases, it is because their first ex- perience with the sport was so disastrous that it un- dermined their self- confidence. For women who would like to enjoy boating, but who don't want to be per- manently assigned to the task of making sandwiches and serving drinks aboard, there are some alternatives. All across Canada, there are sailing schools offering courses for beginners. Their instructors are competent, they know how to sail and how to teach their art. For those who don’t like the idea of a school, there's always the possibility of chartering, alone or with a group of friends, a boat with skipper. Although he may not be a teacher, the skipper usually enjoys teaching all he knows. This situation usually affords an excellent opportunity to learn “crewmanship” in a relaxed atmosphere. Then, there is also the possibility of adding sound theoretical knowledge to it all by taking one of the many courses offered by Canadian Power Squadrons and many of the community colleges across Canada. And don’t overlook your boating friends, You'll find they will always welcome ’ another hand aboard and be willing to teach you the skills you require to go it alone. It doesn't take long to develop the confidence and ability you need to take your place on the water. Just remember, boating ts for women, too. mit COMPLETE TV PROGRAMS: Page : 4 eo
