Retired people on. fixed. incomes also enjoy the RV lifestyle. And specially equipped RV's can. give the handicapped a freedom to explore which would otherwise be impossible. It is an activity which . helps to maintain family togetherness and RV camping: provides a means for people ‘of all ages to enjoy a wide spectrum of : healthy outdoor activities. By their nature, today’s recreational vehicles are also conservation vehicles. They carry limited quantities of fuel, food and water, encouraging campers to minimize waste. The U:S. Dept. of Transportation states that seven out of ten automobiles used for commuting between work and home carry only one person. Under these conditions, a new compact car will get around 30 passenger miles per gallon (pmpg). RV's, on the other hand, are used almost ex- clusively for transporting family groups; a vehicle carrying four people on a ‘camping trip would get approximately 50 pmph. RV'ers on a trip usually ; form naturally into their own “car pool”, thus making the recreationg! vehicle a Positive force for con- servation without sacrificing pleasure. Weight reduction, better aerodynamics and more efficient engines are making today’s RV’s more practical than ever before. . In addition, RV’s are more efficient when longevity is considered. The average recreational vehicle maintains its resale value far better than the average car, becanse the RV last much because manufacturing a vehicle consumes considerable energy, this translates into significant savings. The Canadian RV industry believes that voluntary energy conservation: is the key to longterm enjoyment: of recreation for Canadian families. Consequently, they are encouraged to turn off or adjust all energy users in the home prior to leaving in their recreational vehicle. In addition, RV campers are urged to maintain the legul speed limit, thus saving fuel and lessening the chance of accident. All the fuel conservation actions taken by the RV industry in Canada and by camping families across the country serve to demon- . strate that RV manufac- turers and users are very serious about saving energy. Because only with serious conservation efforts today can we enjoy the benefits of camping tomorrow.
