Its Scoozami neighbour offers a slice of bistro chic without the downtown com- plications of parking, bridge travel and unexpected urban unpleasantries. Zen, meanwhile, offers a real North Shore slice of fine Japanese dining. And that marker, over the past five years, has become one of the most competitive of any local restaurant catego- rv. Sushi bars have sprung up in unlikely locales across the North Shore. But there are few that deliver the entire restaurant package of service, ambience and food quality; fewer sill that offer menus with much to distinguish them from their competition. You've got your sushi, your sashimi, your tempura, your udon, your heated saki, your Kirin beer by the quart. At Zen you've got much more. . Ever since it was bought by Angela Jamal and Jun Park in September 1995 the West Vancouver ; Japanese restaurant has been much more than another sushi bar where the takeout trade is the equal to the in-heuse trade. Jamal lett the restauranc in August, but Zen, with > Park at the heim, remains a destination Japanese dining locale. Its interior combines the elegance and clean lines of ebony, glass and wood grain. Its ambience has down- town sophistication but is blessedly free of any down- town pretension.
