Perhaps it’s fitting that a
magazine devoted to radio
would present such poor
visuals for the reader. The
layout is barebones, trom
the picture of the antenna
on the cover to the snail
photographs inside. If there
are people in any shots they
are usually standing in front
of some massive piece of
radio equipment which, of
course, is the focus of the

photographer.

Despite its unappetizing
appearance Monitoring
Times does have interesting,
content. One article, The
Radio War Over Vietnam,
looks at the clandestine sta-
tions that operated in
Southeast Asia 25 years ago.
Great insight into an
obsgure aspect of history —
the photographs (including
one of Jane Fonda from the
Nihon Depna News, July
1972) are litle more than
thumbnails on the page

unfortunately.

Another article looks at
the Voice of America job
cuts and program changes.
While many VOA European
language broadcasts are
being discontinued they are
adding service in Uzbek,
Macedonian, Spanish for
Columbia, and Indonesian
frequencies in Jakarta and
