Taxes subsidizing NV City politicking Dear Editor: On Dec. 12 you printed a full-page advertorial by North Vancouver City Mayor Barbara Sharp disguised as a city adver- tisement but paid for with tax dollars. The content was slanted as if it was a personal season's grect- ing by the mayor and even included a Mayor Sharp “news release” disguised as “Wishing you millennium comfort and joy.” The mayor's name is blatantly printed six times in the ad, while the rest are called just “councillors” and mentioned by fame twice in fine print. At 2 cost of hundreds of dollars, this ad contai of value to the taxpayer. This self-serving publicity ed nothing just one of a thousand reasons our taxes are so high. Of all the citi tnittees struck by her majesty, whoops sorry, | meant mayor, Barbara A. Sharp there is none to study ways and means of reducing taxes. An oversight? Not in my opinion. It would throw the spotlight on just this kind of waste of tax dollars. J. Edwards North Vancouver MAIL Box Beets about bri Dear Editor: Re: Lions Gate Bridge construction — zone limit. It's ironic that there ts a construction zone speed limit on the bridge now that work- ers are “inches away from traffic.” Pedestrians and cyclists have endured these condi- tions for many years with no thought for their safety. Why can’t these workers (who are usually not even on the bridge deck but hanging above it somewhere) just watch themselves like all oth- ers have done for many years and allow the traffic to travel as normal. 1 also wonder how long it will be before we necd anoth- Arguments add up to zero Dear [ditor: Re: Real millennium, Deana Lancaster is wrong (Millennial mood swings, Dec. 19 News). Rudolf Marek North Vancouver Nore Year 2000 tales Dear Editor: Re: The millennium. What in the world has happened to something called “corn- mon sense?” No one would dispute that a newborn baby is living in its first year unt! 12 months of age when it becomes one year old. No onc would dispute that the 21st page of a book follows page 20. Since 1900 we have been living in the 20th century. The yea- 2000, therefore, must be the first year of the 2st century at the end ‘of which we will celebrate the year 2001 (sic) and enter into the 22nd century. That is how I see it! E wonder how many litres have been pat on it since it was built. There is no reason the bridge should have been in the shape that it is. Many Sunday, December 26, 1999 — North Shcre Mews - 9 great bridges around the work are much older but in much better shape. The key is Maintenance. A recent trip to San Francisce took me over the Golden Gate bridge. It was being painted. I later found out it is always being painted. When they get to the end they just dge upkeep start at the beginning again. This is how to take care of such a truly enormous invest- ment like a bridge. Maybe with the new bridge we should also be looking for a new attitude from the body responsible for the bridge’s maintenance. S.
