Objecting to eavesdropping | Dear Editor: Trevor Lautens’ introductory paragraph: “Care to eavesdrop?” (in his April 16 column} should have made it clear to everyone that the email exchange — between Maggie Pappas (on behalf of the West) Vancouver Arts Centre Trust {WVACT) ) and me (on behalf of the executives of several ratepayer groups) was not intended for general distribution or publication by either of us. [don’t know how he got it and apparently nei- ther does Maggie. My email was headed: “NB This is quasi-confi- dential for the Ratepayer Coalition (from ADRA)” and provided by me anly to the ADRA board and to the exec- utives of ather — ratepayer groups in preparation for a meeting (held March 29) of the ratepaver umbrella group which f char. ‘The information panel was being arranged under the auspices of that group, and it was therefore Necessary for them to be able to. discuss any pre-conditions that were being sought by WVACT. At the information session on the proposed arts. centre (held April 15, with the wel- come presence of Couns. Bird, Soprovich, and Williams), there was an interesting and useful discussion of the issues with the panel and the ratepay- cr representatives. Carolanne Reynolds President, Ambleside and Dundarave Ratepayers’ Association Carolanne,Reynolds@Faxim um.com What will Liberals do? Dear Editor: Re: MLA Katherine Whittred’s April + News fetter in which she berates the NDP for allowing the poverty gap benveen rich and poor in B.C. to become the widest in the country. She is correct to do so, One measure of a just society is how well we treat those less fortunate than most of us. The largely disenfranchised resi- dents of the downtown east- side are a striking example. Will a Liberal: government increase funding for more detox facilities, experiment with more “enlightened” treatments for drug addicts and increase funding for social housing? [| would like to know what her party will do about Narrowing the poverty gap, especially in a climate of fiscal restraint that they will inherit. Rerating the NDP without offering a plausible alternative is the easy thing for a politi- cian to do. Malcolm Berry West Vancouver EN rysler, Dodge, ep or Plymouth vehicles are recalled. With regard to the Hashing yellow pedestrian activated Bight at the intersection of Capilano and Elden Read, it is obvious that this type or light is useless and, in some wars, dangerous. Another one of these lights is located at Mr. Seymour Parkway at Broadview mainly for Windsor school, Most of the students don’t bother to activate the light and it is quite understandable as many drivers are not quite sure what the flashing vellow represents. The iashing yellow lights crossing, The Oceanside Community of YggrCREEK 45 min. from Vancouver on the Seato Sky Hwy. 1(888)922-9462 www. creek.com on Capilano Road at the sus: pension bridge make more sense as there isa large sign prior to the intersection warn ing motorists that, when the vellow Hights are Hashing. to stop ac the pedestrian crossing coming up. ht is about time the munic- ipal authorities should realize that the red light: is under- stead by evervane and should act accordingly.
