THE CITY OF NORTH VANCOUVER b> THE “MILLENNIUM PROJECT”: HISTORY ENGRAVED IN STONE! The City of North Vancouver is evaluating plans to bring back the good old days and give you a history lesson in the process! It’s their “Millennium Project”: a Lower Lonsdale plan «to build a civic plaza that celebrates the major events of the last 1000 years in stone! “It’s a ’ - gathering space for people,” said City Development Planner Bob Spencer, who hopes to bring his concept to life in the year 2000. PLAZA DESIGN The paved civic plaza, presently being evaluated by City Council, is designed to create a central place for the community to come together. Five footpaths will converge upon the plaza in order to naturally draw people to the site to visit, enjoy a special community event, or simply relax on surrounding grassy slopes. The plaza itself will be large enough to accom- modate special events like ethnic festivals or antique car dis- plays. And when there’s nothing happening, there will always be something to do because the plaza is a special event in itself! HISTORY UNWINDS Inspired by one of nature’s most elegant patterns - the nautilus shell, an expanding spiral of engraved stones will take you outward on a historical journey of major world events into the millennium. The history lesson begins at the centre of the plaza in the year 1000 A.D; then leads you through time until you reach a sculpture celebrating the year 2000 A.D. E ssides world events, the pathway will include the important history dates of Canada’s First Nations people, and best of all, public art pieces illuminating our fascinating local history. Look for this exciting wheelchair-accessibls civic plaza between Lonsdale and Chesterfield, just off West 1st Street near the turn of the century!
