The May 25 event follows the murder in March of Mohammed (Mo) Mirhadi. The 2] year old was shot to death while watching a movie at the Esplanade 6 Cinemas in North Vancouver City. His death marked « at least the fifth violent incident in an cight- month period connected to a loose group of young North Vancouver men of Iranian descent. Nosth Vancouver RCMP continue their investigation of the Mirhadi killing. A police spokesman was tight-lipped about any progress on the case. Mirhadi’s father Jahangir Mirhadi will be ‘among the guest speakers. He will address the family’s role in youth violence preven- tion. Sid Mirhashemy, a director of the North ® stiore Multicultural Society, is a driving force behind the youth violence session. Said Mirhashemy, “The recent violent incidents and pointless killings amongst youths in our community have reached an alarming level that needs immediate atten- tion. . “The violent behavior of youngsters XM ircctly affects their future, the lives of their families and the weil- -being of the communi- ty.” An organizing committee has spent the past few months to bring the upcoming event together. The'seminar on youth violence prevention will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 25 ar the Lucas Centre gym, 2132 Hamilton Ave. ” in North Vancouver. Admission is free of charge. Among the speakers: @ Lola Chapman, a victim-assistance volun- teer and coordinator of the Ridge Meadows Youth and Justice Advocacy Association. Chapman will talk about strategies to prevent youth violence; @ North Vancouver RCMP Supt. Gil Yard. Supt. Yard has a masters degree in psycholo- gy and criminology and has served for 36 years asa police officer with the RCMP throughout Canada. He will address the vio- lence issue from a policing perspective; @ Const. Tom Seaman, North Vancouver RCMP; @ Salim Kaderali, chairman of the North Vancouver family court and youth justice committee. Kadera!i is a recipient of the -Canada 125 medal for outstanding commu- nity service. He will discuss the community's role in the prevention of youth violence; @ Ali Shenassa, a youth counsellor. Shenassa will talk about the basic causes and strategies for youth violence prevention; @ Ramin Mahjourt, a columnist. Mahjouri will discuss media and sensitivity regarding youth violence; B Anahita Abed, a youth worker, Abed will look at violence prevention from a youth per- spective. The session will be moderated by Parisa Baghaee, a Grade 11 honor student at Carson Graham secondary school in North Vancouver, and Farbod Mirhashemy, a Grade 12 honor student at Carson.
