gains a fashion ed By Layne Christensen Fashion Editor FASHIONPHILES are abuzz over Marks & Spencer’s sleek new Robson Street store. The U.K.-based retail chain has long been a popular destination — for cotton — undies and = Christmas biscuits. But when it comes to fashion clothing, “Marks & Sparks” has never topped the list. That's all changing, says Marks & Spencer spokesman Barry Waite. The two-level Robson Street boutique is the second “Top Store” to open in Canada. The first is on Toronto’s Bloor Street. Both stores feature the cream of Marks & Spencer’s collections — imported European fash- ions, accessories and fine foods. Anyone who has been to the M&S at London's Marble Phote submitted “MOCK croc” footwear is .a bargain at Sears. Arch or on Paris’ Boulevard Haussman knows the ook. The opening of the Robson Street store reinforces Vancouver's reputation as a world class city, said Waite. “The phenomenal reaction during the store’s first week of opening has sent a message through =the — company,” according — to Waite. That mes- sage? That Vancouverites love fashion and they have money to spend. Expect a change ar Marks & Spencer’s Park Royal store, too. Store — manager Ann Chadwick has been notic- ing, a style evolution over the past two years. If customers haven’t noticed a change yet, they will soon. Specialty items like $350 cashmere sweaters will remain exclusive to the Robson Street location. But many of the trendier items will show up at Park Royal. “More — lycra!” says Chadwick of one of the more notable additions to the store’s fashion mix. “More lycra tops, more velour vera strecch leg- gings, stretch shoes with lycra.” Colors like lime green are new. Chunky heeled shoes are, too, For spring there are new polo shirts for men. The result is that a lot of younger customers are coming through the door, says Chadwick. eee Sears has the best deaf on trendy “mock croc” pumps, loafers and ankle — boots. They're a steal at just $34.99 to $79.99. Limited sizes are avail- able but customers can also - place an order through Sears’ fall/winter catalogue.
