In fieu of flowers, donations to the Heart Fund would be appreciated, WEVILLE - CHARLES JAMES October 22, 1995 A longtime member of British Cot- tumbia's choral music and amateur operatic communities, has died on Vancouver Island at the age of 70 years, He was born in Lichfield, Statfordshire, England and was very Proud to be a member of one of the oldest families of that histeric city. As a young man he became a jour- alist, working for several newspa- pers in the West Midlands, During the Second World War he served in the King's Own Scottish Borderers, sttaining the rank of sergeant. He fecorded many of his wartime expe- riences in English newspapers, most notably his regiment's famous tink- ing up with the Sixth Airborne Divi- sion after their historic landing by air anross the river Rhine. After the war he continued as a journalist un- ti) his emigration to Canada in 1953, He worked tor many years as a court reporter and administrator in North Vancouver and was a Justice of the Peace for British Columbia. He retired with his wife Christine to Mesachie Lake on Vancouver (sland. He was probably known dest in the Vancouver area for his active in- volvement in choral music, Anglican, church music and amateur operatic productions. He possessed a rich bass voice, and tad a particular fondness for the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, of which he had an encyclopedic knowledge. He per- formed, toured and recorded with the Vancouver Bach Choir for 25 years. He also sang with many other Vancouver choral organizations of the time, including the Vancouver Cantata singers, the Gallery Singers and'the Minnesingers. His devotion to music and liturgy of the Anglican Church was lifelong and he was well known to the choirs and congrega- tions of St. Clement's (Lyna Valley), St, James’, Christ Church Cathedral and lately St. Peter's Church, Quamichan. He loved the opera and the musical stage, and performed as a chorus member, and in many leading roles, with the Greater Van- couver Operatic Society, the North Shore Light Opera Society, Theatre in the Park, the Savoyards and the Vancouver Opera Association. He was a member and past president of the lake Cowichan Music Club. Less well known was his enthusiasm for - cricket, He was a follower of the Vancouver Rowing Club's cricket teams, an experienced scorekeeper and, more recently, a lite member of the Cowichan Cricket Association. He will be sadly missed by his widow Christine; children Robert. Anne and Tom; grandchildren Jeremy, Kate and Charlotte; and former wife Gertrude; relatives in England, sister Beryl, brothers Peter and Noel. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Navember 4, 1995 at St. Peter's An- glican Church (Quamichan) in Dun- can. No flowers please. en ERIC A.
