24, 1994 - North Shore News LBOX Montroyal decision right Dear Editor: My phone has been ringing off the hook even after the Jaly U1 council meeting when members of district council gave their reasons ts to why they voted in fovor of a review of the Montroyal connector issne and to include the cost in the 1995 budget. It appears that many people are still unclear about the purpose of this decision, District community and road plans going back 35 years clearly show provisions, for such a connec- tor. A decision not to build at the time but to do so in the future was made inasmuch as traffic was much less than it is today, But the right- of-way was always maintained and shown as such on the maps. However, other neighborhoods Cougar concerns raised Dear Editor: For approximately one hour on July 13, between 8:36 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. two local dogs treed a cougar at the intersection uf Mountain Highway and Borthwick Road. One Of my neighbors kept the cougar under observation for the full hour while he tried “to. get the RCMP or Fish and Wildtife to attend Neither agency came. This is a neighborhood rife with kids, many of whom are out and about between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. The refusal of the police and Fish and Wildlife to attend is reprehen- sible and deplorable. This is not a barking dog or loud party complaint. It’s a cat that is easily capable of killing. Doesn’t that justify a little assistance from the police or Fish and Wildlife? Doug Baker North Vancouver have suggested that failure to build the connector has resulted ia their neighborhoods carrying an inereas- ing additional and unjust burden, They have stated repeatedly chat district conneil hay protected other neighborhoods at their expense. What is true is that traffic all over the Nori Shore has increased considerably. The number of sec- ondary suites has sky-rocketed, Families own more cars. More members of households are part of the warkforee. They are making more trips per day — all resulting in more traffic. The region's population will continue to grow and will double in the next 20 years, North Vancouver District's con- tinuing reliance on land sales to meet operating expenses \ ring Connector Dear Editor: Open letter to North Vancouver District Mayor and Council re: the Montroyal connector. I write to congratulate you on the recent decision to proceed further with the Montroyal connection pro- ject. This has been a difficult issue to deal with as the council has been confronted with a well-organized vociferous opposition group. However, as a resident of one of the few Lonsdale/Delbrook cross streets { have seen traffic increase dramatically in the 13 years I have lived here. It is not unreasonable to expect that the burden of the increase in traffic should be shared amongst all neighborhoods. I can sympathize with the nore development and more traffic. The Upper Levels Highway, never intended to carry anything but mar. ginal local tratfic, will be saturated even if the We tview interchange is completed. The steps now Giken by council, on the other hand, will result ia an update of all relevant material and data, including the cost, in time for inclusion in the (995 budget should council decide to proceed. It is up to us, collectively, to use this Hime to seek lasting solutions based on principles rather than at euch other's expense. There is no doubt tn my mind that council has made the right decision. The community sist do the rest. Coun, Erale Crist District of North Vancouver applauded motives of the Montroyal residents who oppose the connector, although the plan has been on the cards for many years. Ninety percent of the Montroyal residents affected by the connector would have (or should have) been aware of the proposed extension when they purchased their property. We are fortunate to have a coun- cil that can understand the broader implications of an issue and act for the good of the whole community rather than be swayed by small self- interested groups. Hopefully there will be no more vacillating and the project will pro- ceed as soon as the cost estimate is completed. P.E. Rawley North Vancouver Help house French students Dear Editor: Nacel Canada, a non-profit organization, needs host families for teens from France. There are still 18 boys and nine girls as yet unplaced for July 29 to Aug. 26. Time is running out! Please help! There is no remuneration for hosting, only the benefit of making a new foreign friend and sharing your family life and area with your guest. Many students from B.C. are being welcomed in French and Spanish families and have been in past years. The program is set up for total language immersion. The students have no set agenda and can do whatever the family is doing. They just become another child in your family and are matched so that their interests are similar to those of their hosts. An ability to speak French is not required. Having teens of your own, though ideal, is not essential, Interested people should call me at 922-2159 (or fax 922-2594), (Only for those families calling long distance: !-800-556-6648.)
