Yy 34 - Friday, Nov. 13, 1992 — North Shore News AUTOMCTIVE TV special will announce awards From page 30 they’re firs: introduced to the public. Naturally, it can be difficult for journalists to remember particular differences between cars. The Car of the Year runoffs offer Cana- fan automobije journalists the opportunity to make comparisons directiy with relative ease and ac- curacy. For members of AJAC this means greater journalistic profes- sionalism. For Canadian readers, it means more accurate and in- formative reports. This year’s event took place Gct. 27 through Oct. 31 at Shan- nonville racing circuit between Toronto and Montreal, an idea! Iocation for a number of reasons. Most of Canada’s population base is in this area, and so are most of Canada’s major automotive publications and journalists. The Shannonville circuit itself offers an excellent variety of test sections: a low, twisty circuit for handling testing, and a faster cir- cuit for high-speed testing. Both courses are relatively flat with lots of runoff area. There’s also an excellent off-road circuit next door which includes steep inclines and declines, gravel: and rock sec- tions, muddy trails, and a foot- deep “‘lake”’ for fording practice. In addition, there are ‘‘real- world’? facilities nearby: country roads with potholes and broken surfaces, two-lane highways and the 401 freeway. . Voting this year was made ex- tremely difficult by the fact that there are so many good cars in every category. In the family car category, for example, entrants included the Chrysler Intrepid/Concorde/Eagle vision triplets, Nissan Altima, Toyota Corolla, Mazda 626 Cronos, Volkswagen Passat VR6, Volvo 850 GLT, Hyundai Elantra 1.6, and BMW 318i. All of these are exceptionally good vehicles, and I felt bad about favoring one at the expense of the others. But one of them will win, and I predict it will be the Chrysler LH sedans. Journalists must also vote on an overall Car of the Year. Again, this is a job that must be done with a lot of thought and care, since so many of the en- trants deserve to wii. I believe the Chrysler LH sedans will also win this award simply because they are such a quantum leap for Chrysler and North American sedans in general. The hulking, V10-powered Dodge Viper was one of the nominees for Best New Perfor- mance Car this ycar, and there is currently just one Viper that meets Canadian safety and emissions standards available in Canada. Journalists had a chance to drive it accompanied by a chaperone. Chrysler insisted that a repre- sentative accompany the test driver to make sure that this Viper remains the only Viper in Canada. As a credible source of praise, automobile manufacturers take the Car of the Year Awards very seriously. An independent award by a group of experienced automotive writers is worth its weight in geld. Expect to see commercials portraying these awards very soon after they are announced in January. For the first time, the 1993 Car of the Year awards will be televis- ed as part of a Car of the Year Special, Jan. !5, on the CTV network. The special will contain footage of the testing, interviews with journalists, and coverage of the awards presentations. | GUILDFORD MOTORS '92 PROTEGE SE 4 Dr. 1800cc IT JUST FEELS RIGHT Starting from PDI & FREIGHT INCLUDED HERE’s How IMSA JUDGED THE NEW AUDI 100: & In @ recent independen comparison test, International Motor Sports Association {IMSA} declared the new Audi 200 frnt- wheel drive best overc!i performer in its class.
