Standing on the beach at its West Vancouver location near John Lawson Park, you see a small! cottage among other homes that line the shore. Its roof is completely covered by leafy green vines growing from gnarled branches that twist their way up the side of the building. This end of the house, featuring glass windows and doors, affords a wonderful view of the beach and ocean. : As you can see, there is another roof-line in behind the small cot- tage. This addition will be il- lustrated in my next column and is the view that people will be more familiar with as it is the entrance to the “Silk Purse.” Built in the °20s, this seaside cottage has an interesting history. John Rowlands, who purchased it nearly 25 years ago, renovated the - home. According to Rowlands, his “HIRING «CAMPING © ADVENTURE TRAVEL 201 LONSDALE, NORTH VANCOUVER "Open at 10 ® Sundays 11-4 * 980- 313- NORTH SHORE HERITAGE son Jay was responsible for its name “‘The Silk Purse,”? as Jay was convinced his father was try- ing to make ‘‘a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.”’ Rowlands filled this home with Canadian memorabilia, and open- ed it for use as‘a romantic honeymoon getaway. : Later the Rowlands constructed an extensive addition, and moved: in. ‘The Council West Vancouver ptrchaced this property and it was renovated in 1991 by the Parks and Recreation Department and the West Vancouver Community Arts Council. Next Friday I will feature its other face and discuss its present use. — by Dorothy Foster eo e ‘Sierra-Lite There's probably - no better value in the world ‘than the . lightweight, durable Sierra- Lite for mountain biking, walking and practical street wear Regular $B9°9 This Weekend: — Onlyt
