Sunday, August 25, 1991 - North Shore News - 43 HOROSCOPES When in doubt communicate! I TEACH principles of communication and, in my thera- facilitate communication be- tween people who do not know how to keep a discussion peutic counselling practice, from becoming a fight. Some arguments seem to appear out of nowhere and leave everyone furious with nothing resolved, My next several columns will provide pointers to help you avoid useless battles. Does this sound familiar? Someone in your family (maybe you) says, ‘I did it because you told me..." The other person's voice starts rising in anger, ‘*{ never said any such thing...’? You: *‘l distinctly heard you tell me...’’ Other per- son: ‘Since when did you ever listen to what I say?*? And you're off! Soon you'll both be shouting, not only about what was said yesterday, but about things said fast month and two years ago. It’s often impossible for family members to agree on the exact details of a past incident, and this only aggravates the situation. Recollections vary, and since there’s no way to prove cither side’s argument, everyone ends up angry. How then can you halt a cycle of ‘*You said’? — ‘*No I didn’t’? arguments? You stop them by refusing to be dragged into arguing about the past. You say, ‘‘Look, the past is gone. We can’t do anything about it. Now is what we could choose to deal with. Tell me, and I'll listen, What is it that you mean?” When you battle over what was sai! or done in the past, you’re trying to prove that you're ‘right’? and the other person is “wrong.’’ Bringing the conversa- tion to the present means that you can concentrate on what each per- son wants. Frequent arguments over trifles are often an indication of some deeper conflicts. The ‘‘trifles’’ become a way to air, but not solve, the buried anger. In many other incidences, fami- ly bickering is pointless. It is just a matter of people not under- standing how certain talk-patterns — such as arguing over the past — can trap them. Next week: ‘‘Heads I Lose, Tails You Win: The Double Message Trap.”” For the week of Aug. 25-31, 1991 ALL SIGNS Question: Most of us chase frantically around in our attempts to build security, but those people who know what life is all about have a unique leisureliness. How can they afford to be so casual in a flustered world? Answer: Who stands already on heaven’s topmost dome needs not to search for ladders.
