Mitchell criticizes NDP over UBC strike THE PROVINCIAL gov- ernment should have taken action earlier to prevent the current strike by the Cana- dian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) at the University of B.C., West Vancouver-Garibaldi MLA and advanced education, training and technology Liberal critic David Mitchell has said. The labor dispute, he said, was unnecessary and could have been avoided. “All parties, including the gov- ernment, have seen this strike coming for some time now,”’ said Mitchell. ‘Following the disrup- tion of classes at the B.C. In- stitute of Technology (BCIT) Jast month, this is the second major disruption we’ve secn in advanced education this year.’” Mitchell noted that the final agreement with BCIT support staff was the result of behind- the-scenes manoeuvring at the highest levels. He added that instead of ‘‘this backroom approach’? he would like to see the provincial govern- ment lay down clear guidelines on “acceptable settlements.’” “This government must take its responsibility for the provision of post-secondary education more seriously,”’ said Mitchell. He added that a speedy resolu- tion to the labor dispute is im- perative because it comes at the worst possible time for UBC’s 30,000 students and may prevent many of them from completing this year’s course work. “We are now sitting on a labor relations powder keg in advanced education in our province. I feel we are in for a prolonged period of labor unrest in post-secondary education,”’ Mitchell said.
