RCMP TURBAN ISSUE: | Artist's comment racist As a Canadian with a Sikh ancestry, I find this Dear Editor: In response to Mr. Gibbons’ comments regarding the federal government’s decision to allow Sikh RCMP officers to wear turbans (North Shore News, April 22), one wonders if he believes that Sikhs are newcomers to Canada. Sikhs and their descendants are inextricably woven not only into the history of Canadian society but also its future. We are Canadians with or without turbans and as such must be allowed to participate fully in Canadian society. His comments re-open old wounds. Perhaps Mr. Gibbons would like to return to 1914, when 376 Sikhs arrived at Vancouver Harbour and were refused en- try? He claims he is not ‘‘anti & not racist,”” however, he refers to the turban as a “‘table cloth’’! comparison not only racist but blatantly disrespectful of an individual's religious preference. He says that the ‘‘silly little photograph”’ is bought because it says Canada. That's fine; no one is opposed to tourists buying an image of what they perceive to be Canadian. However, realistically Canada is a multicultural society and would we not also like to be viewed in the world community as a nation known for tolerance, justice and leading in human rights? Come on, Mr. Gibbons, let's get on with the real issues of the 1990s —- the environment, world peace, equality for women and justice for aboriginal peoples. Gurmeet Kubicek North Vancouver Work limitations not racist Dear Editor: In the article on the front page of your paper of Sunday, April 22, there was a quotation from pro- fessor Mugh Johnston which in- cluded the following: ‘‘And for a Sikh ... it’s a real compromise of his conscience and faith to insist that he not wear a turban. To do that would keep those people out.”” But, that’s life. There must be quite a number of occupations which are barred to certain indi- viduals because of their faith. Presumably a devout Jew could not consider working as a butcher in a shop that required the han- dling of pork, and conscientious members of some extreme Chris- tian sects could not bring themselves to take jobs which re- quired working on Sundays, or in some cases Saturdays. Doubtless there are occupations denied te those Muslims and Hin- dus who place the tenets of their Are we a nation of clowns? Dear Editor: A nation of clowns or mascarade perpetueile? By referring last week to the RCMP uniform as a ‘‘costume,’’ Prime Minister Brian Mulroney has revealed to all of Canada his true colors and has indicated the direction our nation is headed for under his leadership. His blatant disregard for the values and symbols all real Cana- dians stand for will undoubtedly be reflected in the outcome of the next federal election. H.G.F. Unger North Vancouver GOVERNMENT OF CANADA religions before all else. Such limitations on employment have always been taken for granted. Why should an exception be made in the current much- publicized issue? And this has nothing whatever to do with rac- ism. 5.F.
