PORT DAY ACTIVITIES ALLOW AN INSIDE LOOK EVER WONDER what the Van- couver Port Corporation (VPC) does in this town? On Sunday all of your questions about Canada’s largest port will be answered as the Crewn corpora- tion holds Port Day °90 on bath sides of Burrard Inlet. When the annual Port Day event was first held it was confined only to the South Shore of Burrard Jn- let, even though the VPC owns several facilities on the North Shore, such as Neptune Bulk Ter- minals and the Lynnterm terminal. Not too many people were even aware of the annual Port Day festivities, thinking the only event being offered were free harbor cruises. But all of that began to change in 1987 when the annual open- house event began to grow at a rapid pace, expanding for the first time to the North Shore in 1988 and to Westshore Terminals at Delta’s Roberts Bank in 1989. Today, Port Day inctudes demonstrations and displays put on by the port industry, transport and municipal sectors and enter- tainment, bands and balloons have been added. Barbara Duggan, VPC director of corporate communications, says the aim of Port Day is to introduce the general public to the Port of Vancouver. “The philosophy behind Port Day is a simple one, a4 once a year opportunity for the owners of Canada’s largest: port-namely the Canadian people-to get a first. hand look at the diverse and fascinating complexity of ane of the top 20 ports in the world,”* says Duggan. “For the other 364 days of the year, the round-the-clock cpera- tional realities of the Port of Van- couver preclude broad public ac- cess other than on an appointment basis."' Port Day has grown from Iess than 1,000 people per day to an estimated 12,000 people per day and, according to Vancouver's marine industry, more people of all ages have a far better idea of Canada’s crucial dependence on world trade, and the port's ability to handle millions of tonnes of ex- ported and imported cargo better if they have a first-hand look at some of the facilities. The VPC’s operations generate thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in economic benefits.
