MAILBOX Soliciting charitable donations by telephone bothers Dear Editor: Recently I was approached by two charitable organizations by phone. One person connected with one of these organizations said to me, “Do you still live at such and such an address?’? and then I got suspicious because I moved to my address approximately three and a “Truth” can be seary Dear Editor: As a Christian, I was sorry to read the letter by a mother con- cerned that her children might have been the victims of scare tac- tics at a bible camp. Although I know nothing of this particular incident, I would like to teply to the impression left that the church uses such tactics to gain membership. Jesus said that “unless you believe I am who I say I am, you will perish in your sins.’’ These are frightening words. The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. Against this dismal diagnosis, Jesus proclaimed that He came for the purpose of dying for the forgiveness of these sins, that we might be saved from this fate, and that this gift of eternal life is free to all who come to Him. This is the good news that Jesus and the church announces every day throughout the world. It would be a half-truth for the church to proclaim God’s love without also teaching the context in which His love is expressed. There is no need for a saviour if what Jesus szid about our predicament is untrue. T can see this being the type of information you might want to protect yourself or your children from. The same might be said in some ways about the nuclear or environmental threats we face. Most of us would rather not hear such truths and, when we do, we often continue to act as though the situation were different. What we choose to believe has little ef- fect on the truth.
