38 - Sunday, October 1, 1989 - North Shore News Get the blood boiling with old-fashioned rodeo A LITTLE more than a year ago, I was in Las Vegas with a group of travel writers. We were from all over the place, but rodeo riding wasn’t the sport of choice for anyone except me. When you grow up on the Alberta prairies, you learn right smartly what ‘‘buildogging’’ a calf means, just how long the rider has to stay in the saddle when “Saddle Bronc Riding’? and what wild-cow-milking can do to your anatomy. Please don’t think | did any of this suicidal stuff myself — [ve better sense. But | watched it, both | the small-change stuff on private tanches where I rode over on horseback, and the big league — the Medicine Hat Stampede. So, there we were, about 12 of us, watching the North American Championship for rodeo. My companions were starting to stifle yawns. Then it began. Both Americans and Canadians were vying for the prizes and within a few minutes | was on my feet, shrieking my lungs out for Canada. My companions were, by this time, out of yawns but a bit em- barrassed about this idiot they had to put up with — the one jumping up and down yelling, ‘Good ride! Come on, Canada! Hang in there! Get him off!’’ (Outriders remove a rider from a bronc or a bull once the buzzer sounds). But soon questions started to be asked — why is he using just one hand? what’s the deal with the ladies on horseback ripping around a bunch of barrels? By the end of the evening, the whole group was up on their feet, yelling encouragement. What a night we had! We screamed, yelled znd stamped our feet, especially when someone from Black Dia- mond, Alberta, scored a fine ride. I like a bit of nationalism. It was great to see any of the riders hang on, but when it was Canada it was like extra butter on the potato. Canada will be competing in another one, the Wrangler Jeans Rodeo Showdown and Arizona Festival. If you’re there, don’t miss it, even if you think you don’t like rodeo. Dates: Oct. 4 to 8, Scottsdale, Arizona at Horseworld. This should be as good as the biggie in Las Vegas, and I'd love to be there. Don’t sit quietly and yawn! Read the rules — they're fairly simple for most events. Scream all you like and don’t be surprised if there’s a big group waving Cana- dian flags and cheering. {t’s fun, and even staid, dozy travel writers can get into the spirit — especially if they’re stuck with someone like me who reverts to childhood. Variable prices trom $12 to $35, are available at the gate or at Dillard Department Store. I'd grab a middle-of-the-arena, halfway-up . is SHE READY? None of this modern ‘‘let's live together’ for Continental. They seem to have side-stepped some regulation governing the American Frequent Flyer policy and the purchaser simply signs a pass entiding him or her to a number of benefits. With the pro- per documents! For example, you can fiy from Seattle to Tokyo, Australia, New Zealand, London or Paris, using their first or business class, buying one fare and getting the other free. I’m not getting into them just now, but any agent has the whole scene spelled out in dollars (U.S.). What makes me laugh is that I wonder if Continental has been talking with God.
