A true story

Her name was Truedy and
that's the way she spelled it.
She said it was her real
name, although I never
learned from her if she had
made that name real for
herself or if her parents had
actually named her Truedy.

If her parents named her,
I expect it was because they

had a big thing going for
truth. Just a guess. I can
imagine them saying, “Well,
we can't name her Truth.
That would be pretty heavy
for her.” Then they might
have thought of calling their
new baby, True. That
wouldn't do either, for the
same reasons Truth seemed

not quite what they wanted.
Perhaps one of them said,
“How about Trudy?” And
the other might have said,
“Good, but let's spell it
Truedy.” So, they picked a
name that said something
about their love for truth,
without laying on _ their
daughter a name that would

be burdensome wo her.
Truedy. Nice. It has the
comfortable familianty of
good old Trudy, and yet.
with the original spelling, it
offers something a little
“different.”

She had come to me for
counselling when she was 18.
She said she felt a little hypo-
critical, as though she were
always playing a role. She
wanted to talk with me about
being her own true self as

she put it, rather than
playing the role of
graduating high = school

senior, or care free radical,
or serious intellectual, or
attractive sex-pot. (Her list -
not mine}.

In the course of our con-
versations, she had quite
often referred to her
Journal. She had. for several

years written into’ her
journal various things she
felt were important to her,
or things she was thinking
out.

She had also written things

that were almost hke
commands to herself. One
day she brought in her

Journal to show me and to
discuss one of its items. She
Started to talk with me about
it and soon leaned over to be
in a position where I could
read it too. It was headed,
TO THINE OWN SELF BE
TRUEDY. That particular
paragraph ended up with
“To thy parents. be Truedy.
To thy friends, be Truedy. in
everything you do = and
everything you think - be
Truedy.”

We decided that she
already had her answer to

being free of role-playing
and hypocrisy. All she had to
do was be Truedy.

And so, it ts.

Now you
know
