A clue to crib death puzzle BALTIMORE (UPI) — Scientists say women who smoke could make their babies more susceptible to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, which kills more infants in the United States than any other disease. “This is really what’s new. Five or 10 years ago, it was not being said that SIDS might be linked to prenatal factors,” said Dr. Marte Valdes-Dapena , of the University of Miami medical school. She was among 250 medical investigators from around the world who gathered at a conference Monday to discuss research on SIDS, q'so known as crib death. Dr. Richard Naeye, chairman of the pathology department at Pennsylvania State University, said his investigation of prenatal factors showed pregnant women who smoke deprive their fetuses of oxygen. “There are 4,000 com- ponents in cigarette smoke that could damage the fetal brain in other ways,” Nacye said. Researchers said SIDS kills more infants between the ages of | week and 1 year in the United States than any other disease. About two infants per thousand dic from the mysterious killer cach year. Other parental conditions in women that researchers suspect are linked to SIDS include abnormally high or low red blood cell levels and marked drops in blood pressure late in pregnancy. Both conditions alter blood flow to the _-fetus, the scientists sal’. Dr. es-Dapena said there is no way now to identify threatened infants. “If there was a test, then we would want to watch high-risk infants. But we don’t yet know how to identify susceptible babies,” she said. Dr. Alfred Steinschneider, director of the SIDS In- stitute at the University of Maryland, said the other Paying the What is a_ child's life worth? Less than $100, says a recent report on the state of the world's children by UNICEF. Spent wisely on each of the world’s poorest 500 million children, that amount could have provided the basic necessities and prevented the deaths of 17 million children in 1981. But according to James P. Grant, executive director of the United Nations factors are in- vestigated. “We are trying to get the pieces of the puzzle and make those pieces fit. This might be another piece of the puzzle. But we have to choose among many puzzles and we could end up with more than one,” he said. Steinschneider said for many years scientists thought crib-death victims “were totally normal except for a minor cold.” “But we've developed increasing evidence that in a large percentage, in some subtle way these babies are really not normal,” he said, noting research showed up to half the SIDS babies had breathing problems. price Children’s Fund (UNICEP), “It proved too high a price for the world community to pay. “And so, every. two seconds of 1981, a child paid that price with its life.” being Grant bases his equation on the total amount of moncy required by global development programs if they are to help people mcct basic needs of health carc, nutrition, education, etc. to $2 500 C3 - Wednesday, July 7, 1982 - North Shore News Romantic likely. attachments Much challenge on the home front, in real estate matters, residence changes.
