A clue to crib death puzzle

BALTIMORE (UPI) —
Scientists say women who
smoke could make their
babies more susceptible to
Sudden Infant Death
Syndrome, which kills more
infants in the United States
than any other disease.

“This is really what’s new.
Five or 10 years ago, it was
not being said that SIDS
might be linked to prenatal
factors,” said Dr. Marte
Valdes-Dapena , of the
University of Miami medical
school.

She was among 250
medical investigators from
around the world who
gathered at a conference
Monday to discuss research
on SIDS, q'so known as crib
death.

Dr. Richard Naeye,
chairman of the pathology
department at Pennsylvania
State University, said his
investigation of prenatal
factors showed pregnant
women who smoke deprive
their fetuses of oxygen.

“There are 4,000 com-
ponents in cigarette smoke
that could damage the fetal
brain in other ways,” Nacye
said.

Researchers said SIDS
kills more infants between
the ages of | week and 1 year
in the United States than any
other disease. About two
infants per thousand dic

suspect are linked to SIDS
