THEY'RE TEED OFF IN WEST VAN Fee hikes put golfers in the rough DESPITE heated protests and arguments by a handful of West Vancouver golfers, council Monday gave the go-ahead to increase 1982 green fees at Gleneagles public golf club. John Burdick, vice- president of Gleneagles, teed-off against council claiming if approved, the new rates would reduce the number of course users. He said the 12 per cent fee in- crease would “alienate regular patrons” and force the course into debt. Golfers are now faced. with paying $4.75 for nine holes compared to last year’s fee of $3.75. Senior citizens, meanwhile, will pay $2.50 to tee off instead of $2.25. Season ticket holders face a whopping $450 tuition to play 80 rounds. Burdick argued: “I know a number of golfers who were concerned about last year’s increase and they no longer play at Gleneagles. And | know with this year’s fee jump the number could casi- ly triple. This includes both members and non-members. People are going to other courses because Gleneagles fees are too high © He pointed out to council that other golf courses offer winter which act while West discounts as toducements Vancouvers course offers hithe concessions Alderman Gor don quickly rephed to Burdick’s criticism and = said “its the most damaging thing you could do is to draw altenQGon to Van couver’s golf courses They have 18 hole fields while we have 9 “Besides. the parks and recreavion advisory Commis son do not hke to see people out) playing golf when it's However, Rowntree 100 copies $ 00 °°” com Mote Mmumney saving fine of copying »x.oTve Lon Concord Copy 101.1515 Pemberton 985-5115 winter and raining.
