finest athletes in Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest will converge on Kelowna July 9 - 12 for the B.C. Games for the Physically Disabled. Athletes will come from B.C., Alberta, Saskat- chewan, Manitoba, Idaho, California, Oregon, and the state of Washington for the three day event. The games will be of- ficially opened Thursday, July 9 by Premier Bill Bennett. The opéning ceremonies get under way at 8 p.m. at the Apple Bowl. These are important games for all B.C. athletes as it will be used for the final selection process in naming the provincial team to the National Disabled Games in Toronto at the end’ of August. Among the top athletes competing in the B.C. games are Rick Hansen of Van- couver, considered one of the finest all around wheel- chair athletes in the world. Last weekend in Win- nipeg, Hansen, who com- petes in track and field, basketball, and volleyball, won-the first national wheel- Close to 200.of the chair marathon for ‘the ‘dis- abled in 2 hours, 4 minutes and 44 seconds. It is ,the . second fastest wheelchair marathons on record. Also competing is Van- couver’s winner of seven gold medals | at the recent Washington — State games; Diane Rahiecki’__ of Penticton, who has broken the world record for 400 metres, along with every member from B.C. who competed at the 1980 Dis- abled Olympics in Holland. Two outstanding athletes in the blind category are Pat York and Yvette Michel, both of Vancouver. York holds the world record for 400 metres while Michel -broke five world records at last year’s Olympics in swimming. All but three events will be staged at the Apple Bowl Complex. Those _ three events are snooker, bowling, and riflery. These games mark only Ahe second time they have been held outside Greater Vancouver area. Last year’s games were staged at Esquimalt near Victoria. Close to 200 volunteers from the Kelowna area are also being used in the staging of the games. the Athletes chosen _ for Summer Games A total of 10 north shore athletes have been selected for the B.C. Summer Games to be held in late August, for track and field events. Mike Anderegg will compete in the Long Jump, 100 and 200 metres while Graeme Bowbrick and Keith Flamma will take part in the 1500 and 3000 metre runs. Brad Fanos will be in the discus, shot and javelin events.
