mailbox W. Van marinarezoning — Dear Editor: During the open meeting of the West Vancouver council on Monday, Sep- tember 29, the practical requirements of local boaters and the critica! need for emergency services were well and broadly stated. But there is. another reason to oppose rezoning and that reason should concem every homeowner in West Vancouver. This rezoning will undoubtedly be the first of a continuing trend to pack in more people as the developer dollar chases the highest return. If we are short-sighted and allow this to occur, if we tolerate the rezoning at Fisherman’s Cove, further upward pressure on property New ferry run Dear Editor: Another chapter in the checkered life of the B.C. Ferries motorship: “Queen of Prince Rupert” is about to be written. It will deal witha new ferry run between Prince Rupert and Skidegate on the Queen Charlotte Islands. Not only will this be a highly subsidized operation but it is doubtful whether many Queen Charlotte Islanders want this kind of service anyway. Known as the Princess”, the “Queen of Prince Rupert” recently lost $2 million on the Seattle- Victoria run. It could lose upwards of $4 million next vear serving the Queen Charlottes. Why? Because “Victoria most Queen Islanders want Vancouver, Rupert. Also, because Hecate Strait is such a rough body of water that cars and trucks (not people) should be transported to the Mainland by covered barge, much as they are now. The “Queen of Prince Rupert” can carry 400 passengers and 80 cars and trucks. It wul need a crew complement of 50. Tl be surpnsed if it carries more than 5O passengers on its average tnp and more than 30 cars and trucks on a typical voyage’ A much arrangement Chariotte to go to not Prince better would be to values is, in time, going to force the single family homeowner out of existence. Profitability often serves as a valuable indicator in the decision making process but I contend that we should not accept that as the determiner of residential zoning. We should recognize that there are sensible limits to supplement the present $1 million a year barge service between Prince Ruupert and Masset with air fares for people. Each Queen Charlotte Islands” resident could be given one return jet fare to Vancouver each year for example. Most of them will fly out anyway and the annual savings on salaries, fuel, maintenance etc. on the “Queen of Prince Rupert” would = still be substantial. The die, unfortunately, may have been cast. A new $4.5 million dock has been built at Skidegate and the recruiting of a “live aboard” crew for the “Queen of Prince Rupert” is under way. This may be what the a threat to all homeowners growth and that we don't have to accept a destructive process of promotion which reduces everything to the dollar denominator. If you share my concern, please take the time to advise our council of your objections. Ken Powers West Vancouver questioned Directors of the B.C. Ferries Corporation have in mind. But do Charlotte Islanders really want to travel on the “Queen of Prince Rupert’? And what about the tax- payers of B.C.? They will be losing between $2 and $3 millon a year in the process. Perhaps we should look on this venture as an ex- periment. Hopefully the B.C. Ferries Corporation will change its mind if the numbers are as bad as I suggest. This was done in the case of the Seattle run and it may be necessary in the case of the new Queen Charlotte Islands ferry service also. Jack Davis, M.L.A.
