. The Citation’s final design

was also’ influenced by the

résults of ‘hundreds of hours,

of wind-tunnel testing. While —

much of this testing involved
aerodynamic styling, it was
also impostant in helping
to ‘‘streamline’’ cars.
Streamlining cars cuts down
on. wind-rush noise, the
outside wind noise that seems
to echo through the car.

A unique’ measuring

system, using the Wind tunnel

and full-scale clay models

with built-in echo testing |

chambers, was developed.
With this system, engineers
were able to refine the ex-
terior body designs, thus
affecting the level of interior
wind-rush noise.

The best way to test a
vehicle’s integrity is to drive
it into a barrier at a
prescribed speed, and record
what happens.

This process can be time
consuming and = expensive,
since every advance model is
virtually hand-built. Bug by
developing a program using
half-scale steel models -
which don’t take nearly as
long to construct and are less
expensive - engineers are able
to perform more tests and
gather more data.

After the results of all the
various tests were compiled,
full-size prototypes were
constructed. Chevrolet alone
built more than 150 of these
vehicles, which were used in
further tests.

The prototype vehicles
were subjected to crash tésts,
both from the front and the
rear. They were also sub-
jected to cross-country
evaluation tests, giving
engineers a chance to
evaluate the cars under actual
driving conditions.
