He te et ee enemys © get this straight ° IN ITS series on immigration the Vancouver Sun reported that people on the North Shore are more opposed to the kind of immigrants we are getting than are other Lower Mainlanders. (‘‘Poll finds N. Shore coolest on im- migraats.’’) Why would that be? Well, it was mentioned that I write frequently on the subject. Thanks. Another way of putting it would be that because of this newspaper the North Shore is better informed. On immigration, the Sun is as timid asa virgin except when it is promoting the ethnics or calling the critics names. If in the past 15 years you have read an editorial in the Sun that condemns our disastrous immigra- tion policies you are a closer reader than I am, Gunga Din. Nor are its columnists inclined to tread those hot cobbles. It would never do to be seen as “‘racist."’ Better that we become a suburb of New Delhi or Jamestown. The Sun is not alone. The media must take a Jot of responsibility for our immigration mess. Those lickspittles in Ottawa would quick- ly create order from chaos if there were any large-scale editorial op- position. It must be said, of course, that the Sun series has performed a service — if only because any review of immigration tends to make people more aware. But its effort was impressive mostly in the amount of space it devoted to the issue. Even now, with figures pop- ping out all over, the newspaper has not laid it on the line. it has still not emphasized that over 70 per cent of the legal im- migrants arriving in this country are from the Third World and that this has becn going on for years; nor that if those 70,000 refugees are allowed to stay here it will result in a total of 700,000 once ali the granddads, grandmums and other relatives arrive. it has still not pointed out that because of crazy ‘‘femily reunification’’ policies, the im- migration department has no con- trol over nearly half of the admis- sions. It has pointed to the decline in immigration from the U.K. and Europe, but as of this writing given few of the startling figures (for years, U.K. immigration was down to 5,000 a year and last year was still a mere 8,000); nor has it stated the obvious, which is that such immigration was purposely throttled in favor of the other sort; nor that for the past 20 years our immigration laws have been writ- ten for the immigrants, not for the rest of us. Perhaps its reporters didn’t know about that. In any event, they relied to an unhappy degree on information from safe academ- ics and the axe-grinding immigra- tion industry. An example was the way a study by Simon Fraser University economics department was quoted (second hand) to show that im- migrant families ‘individually contribute more than $1,300 more annually to the public treasury than they draw in socia! services.*’ As former Immigration Appeal Board chairman Charles Campbell has pointed out, that study was based on the 1981 census figures and is out of date. In the previous decade there had been a greater proportion of well-qualified in- dependent immigrants joining the labor market. But in recent years Ottawa allowed ‘‘family reunifica- tion’”’ to explode and go on ex- ploding while the (mostly white) qualified immigrants were shown the door. Editorially, the Sun is biased in favo. of flooding this country with uon-white immigrants, and its series was not much more than a belated recognition that the natives are restless. A lot of academic gibble-gabbie was included in the reports and the poll wasn’t that great, either. It purported to show that 40 per cent of local people are negative in their approach to immigration, while 55 per cent are postitive. But it covered only a piddling 317 per- sons, of whom a proportion were themselves from places like India. Naturally, they favor their own kind, and the more the better. To repeat: apart from some of the more sensational refugee stuff, the Sun and its partners in editorial omission have for years not given Canadians the facts about im- migration. Instead, they have delivered immigration puff pieces like the Sun’s Sikh series. So it’s small wonder that we North Shore rednecks oppose immigration more than others do.
