My dogs bounce along beside me, sniff the ground and occasionally play tag with the leash. Not exactly the pie- ture of training perfection one might expect. . Even though I train dogs for a living, I certainly don’t expeet my own dogs to be obedience champions when- ever We are out. Don't get me wrong, they have learned all of thetr commands and can pertorm when asked, but I don’t expect them to heel perfectly at my left side for the entire walk. It doesn’t seem like it can be much fun if they are expected to act like robots beside me. I don't mind if my dogs show a casu- al interest in other dogs, smells and people. As long as the, are social and show self- control, am happy with that. But regardless of the fun times, they do have some sim- ple street rules that they must adhere to. When I take a step into the street, they slide into heel position as we cross the street. Once they cross the street, they can do their own thing on the other side. Any dog can be taught this, at any age and it is really easy to do. As you approach all curbs or corners, stop walking, then ask your dog to sit or lure them with a treat into a sit without a coramand. ff you lure them, without asking, the dog will eventually feara to sit on its own at all curbs. The sight of the curb will “act as an unspoken command. In dog training, this is called a sense impression or environ- mental stimuli.
