Here’s how the revolu-
tionary safety system works:

The front seats of the
Volvo S80 utilize the compa-
mvs Whiplash | Protection
System (WHIPS), which
operates ins nwo phases to
reduce the acceleration forces
in the neck during a rear-
impact collision.

In the first phase, the
backrest of the seat is allowed
to move backward with the
occupant ata controlled rate
that reduces G-forces.

In the second phasy, the
angle of the backrest folds
backwards by up to 15
degrees to prevent a catapuit
effect.

The design of the seatback
provides even support of the
spine while the fixed headrest
reduces forces acting on the
neck.
