Catherine Barr Contributing Writer THE excitement is building at the Knowledge Network as Eiwy Yost, and a host of classic movie fea- tures, headlines a brand new fall season. Beginning September 12, “A Night at the Movies” » will feature Yost as he introduces 1 classic collection of 1930s and *40s feature-length films that movie buffs will not want to miss. Legendary actors, like Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanvwyek, can be seen in movies such as Ball af Fire (Oct. 10), while Laurence Olivier stars as vaudevillian Archie Rice in The Entertainer (Oct. 31). Also not to be missed, is the ever popular The Four Feathers (Sept. i9). This clas- sic saga of desert warfare and courage among four English soldiers during the 1890s Egyptian campaign earned director Zoltan Korda an Academy Award nornination in 1939. Throughout November and December, watch for clas- sics from the °40s, °50s and ‘60s as Oscar nominated films like Tom Jones (Dec. 12), The ‘Best Years of Our Lives (Nov. 14) and Wuthering Heights (Nov. 21) premiere. Yost, a celebrated film his- -torian and movie aficionado, cart be seen every Sunday night at 8 p.m. His colourful ; and knowledgeable snippets about life behind the scenes will serve to‘entertain audi- ences throughout the film presentations. The West Vancouver resi- dent and Order of Canada recipient is something of a star in his own right and Yost will be an hand to mect the public on Sunday, September 12 at the network’s Family Day and open house celebra- tion. The Family Day event, held in cooperation with the United Way, is a popular event. Studio tours, entertain- ment, food and fun are all part of the production according to network com- munications officer Carol Bossom. “Last vear, about 10,000 people attended,” said Bossom. “So this vear we’re looking for more.” With their popularity growing and their manage- ment plan solidly in place, the Knowledge Network is fast becoming this province’s new rising star. Programming of a unique- ty B.C. focus has made this division of the Open Learning Agency a household name all across the province. Competition tron: major networks, not to mention premium cable channel choic- es, has forced this litle Burnaby based station to focus on quality, culture and education. With a new episodes of the much loved Heartbeat series, and a list of 8.C. exclusives, fike the new British serics Where the Heart Is, this group of go-getters is winning audi- ences over with ease. Quality children’s pro- gramming has always been a strong feature of the Knowledge Network and this fall is no exception. With everything from ani- mal shows like Zoboomuyio ‘and Kratt’s Creatures to sci- ence shows like Sei Squad and Popular Mechanics for Kids photo Knowledge Network ELWY Yost hosts the weekly series “A Night at the Movies” this fall on the Knowledge Network, chgnnel 5. the network reaches out to kids of all ages. Pre-schoolers are also in for a big treat this fall with the introduction of the sta- tion’s newest member, Eliot Moose. Based on Andrea Beck’s book Elisor’s Emergency, this big lovable fellow will star in a part ani- mated, part live action serics about life in stuffed toy fand. Catch Elliot Moosc, and the station’s other popular characters (like Bananas in Pajamas) on September 12 at the open house. According to Doug Boyce, Director of Communications for the Knowledge Network, it’s all part of the station’s philosophy. “T think one of the biggest challenges is trying to access products in a market place that is very diverse,” said Boyce. “The great part about the Knowledge Network is we're the universe of knowledge.
