school zones

HERE’S a subject we've
broached before bur at
least one reader missed
it.

Zones. Today PH reiterate
the skinny on zones of the
school and playground varicry.
While most cavers can recall
slogans fike “dawn to dusk”
and “ori school days,” most
rarely remember the wheres
and wherefores of playground
and sciieoot zones, As it turns
out, a bit of lateral thinking is
call that is required.

“! First of all, a zone must

i first be delineated. City enyi-

neers mark a zone by erecting
signs on a certain streetside or
collection of streetsides with
cither: a) a yellow Playground
sign showing a silhouctre of a
young person in full-sprint
stride chasing a ball; or b) a
blue School sign with nwo
young people of differing
height walking slowly and
mournfully to or from school.

Secondly, since these zones
have a marked “beginning,”
“which is where a daver of a

“these signs, it must also have a
distinctive “end,” which it
does. The printed definition is
found in the BC Regulations
of the mighty Motor Vehicle
" Act which irrevocably states
“thae “the back of the sign
assembly erected for the
opposite direction of travel
designates the end of the
restricted zone.”

In other words, a driver is
leaving a zone when that dri-
ver passes the backside of
another zone sign placed con-
versely on the other side of

Thirdly, it is important to
note that the speed fimit in

‘either zone is not necessarily
30 km-h (19 m.p.h.), as many
drivers assume and many
more choose to ignore any-
way.

The speed limit in a play-
ground or school zone is
exactly the same as the speed
limit outside of the zone (usu-
ally 50 km-h, or 3) m.p-h.)
UNLESS a speed tab is
affixed beneath the zone sign.
The “tab” is invariably printed
black on white, making it reg-
ulatory (any read marking or
sign printed black on white or
“WHBE on black is regulatory},
and almost always read
“30km-h.”

It is this tab which changes
the speed limit. Get it? The
zone signs mark the zone, the
tabs tell us che speed limit in

as everywhere else.

30km-h tab? Speed limit is
30an-h whilst in the zone
(sometimes the tabs read “no

waGing” which means the
‘speed limit hasn't changed

Finally, a bit of clarity on
the time limits of zones. It’s
pretty simple really. Involves a
bic of that lateral thinking I
