Take care when choosing a mover SCHOOL’S OUT and many British Columbians are on the move. if you or someone you know will soon be changing addresses, here are some tips from your Better Business Bureau (BBB) to help avoid problems: * Choose a mover who has been in business for a while or can provide references, which you should call. * Find out who is actually moving you. Your contract may be with a full service moving company, a moving broker, or a freight for- warder. If it is one of the latter, the move may actually be made by a sub- contractor or series of sub-contrac- tors, if it is a long distance move. Find out who will be liable if prob- lems arise. Be sure you have a street address for that person/company so you can find them if need be. ° if you pack by yourself, you are liable for any breakage. The mover has no responsibility for damage to goods you pack yourself. If you do opt to do your own pack- ding, do a good job using proper packing materials which some moving companies or U-Pack com- ¢ panies sell. * Does the carrier you decide 10 use have ‘Motor Carriers’ Authority? If you are moving from one side of Vancouver to another, this is not an issue, but as soon as the truck crosses a municipal boundary, it must be licensed. Call Motor Carriers at 660-5454 to determine if your mover has the necessary per- mits. ¢ Understand how much insurance the carrier has and what it covers. Decide if you will need to purchase extra insurance to protect your pos- sessions. * Make an inventory of goods to he moved. Supervise the loading and unloading of the truck or arrange for someone who has a copy of the inventory (and who wil! stay with the truck) to do so. ° If damage or loss occurs, have the driver make a note on the delivery receipt and promptly notify the company in writing, keeping a copy for your own files. For names of BBB member movers, call 682-2711, press option 5, and request a list of: movers — local, movers — long distance, movers local & long distance cr movers — overseas. Lists of BBB members by trade classification are availabie free of charge by mail or fax. -“Qur 36th Year” * Tune-ups * Fuel systems * Electrical AirCar Gov.Centified ars B.C.A.A. & AR.A. approved * Consultation *« 985-7455 | This week’s !
