GM studying safety
of pregnant women

SAFETY RESEARCHERS
from General Motors and the
University of Michigan have
launched a joint study on the
safety of pregnant women in
vehicle crashes, which
includes the development of a
pregnant female crash dummy.

According to Dr. David Viano,
principal research scientist at GM,
the two objectives of the study are
to learn more about what happens
in the uterus as the result of trauma
in a vehicle crash, and to possibly
devise new safety restraint systems
that are specifically designed for
pregnant women.

-Dr.. Mark Pearlman of the
Department of Obstetrics. and
Gynecology. at the University of
Michigan says, “Chere is evidence
today that many pregnant women
are not wearing safety belts when
we have known since the ’60s that
safety belts have helped women
protect their babies.”

According to Pearlman, “There
isa misunderstanding by some peo-

ple that somehow safety belts can
injure unborn babies, while the best
evidence is that this is not the case,
except in a small number of
instances. On net, the safety bene-
fits of wearing seat belts during
pregnancy far outweigh the risks.”

The GM and University of
Michigan researchers are develop-
ing a fetal insert dummy simulating
a seven-month unborn chijd that
will be used in crash tests.

Measurements will be taken on
acceleration of the fetal head and
chest, as well as pressure applied to
the abdomen in crash testing.

These readings are expected to
give an indication of the relative
safety of different restraint configu-
rations.

Both Viano and Pearlman stress
proper positioning of safety belts
for pregnant women. They say that
the belts should be worn low under
the pregnant uterus — the seat belt
portion under the bulge of the preg-
nant tummy and over the pelvic
bones, and the shoulder belt
between the breasts and over the
shoulder.
