The changes result from rec-
ommendations made in the
Nemetz inquiry report which was
called to investigate an August ac-
cident at the Departure Bay ferry
terminal in Nanaimo.

That’ accident claimed the lives
of an Alberta mother and her two
daughters after their vehicle
plunged into the water off a
loading ramp. The ferry had pull-
ed away from the dock before all
vehicles had been loaded.

Better ferry passenger safety
facilities considered for H. Bay

THE B.C. Ferry Corp. (BCFC) will make changes to the
operations of all of its major vessels, including ferries
working on the Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo route, and will
also consider installing better passenger safety facilities at
the Horseshoe Bay terminal, BCFC president and chief
executive officer Frank Rhodes has said.

deck loading officer;
@ that a single [lamp on a single
circuit containing three key-

when ramp aprons are free and
clear of the vessel, be installed on
the bridge of all major vessels in
the B.C. ferry fleet;

@ that a strobe light be installed
on all major vessels at each pas-
senger and vehicle access point in
a position where it will be visible
by both the ship’s crew and the
ramp crew and that at least 30 se-
conds before departing the berth,
the master will activate the strobe
lights’ as a warning to crew and
terminal staff that the vessel is
about to depart;

@ that fast powered rescue boats
be installed on ali major vessels in
the B.C. ferry feet;

speed,”’ said Rhodes.

Shortly after the Departure Bay
mishap, West Vancouver mayor
Mark Sager said he was worried
that a similar accident could occur
at ne Horseshoe Bay ferry termii-~
nal.

Sager is part of a group of five
mayors who want the BCFC to
establish a permanent advisory
committee that would include
BCFC officials and the five
mayors whose communities are
affected by ferry traffic.
