The secret of its balanced handling begins with its rear-wheel-drive layout and an engine mousted longitudinally up front, providing an ideal 50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution. This reduces dive and pitch as well as side-to-side body lean. A fully independent suspension consists of front MacPherson Struts, iarc-shaped tower arms, coil Springs, twin-tube gas pressure shock absorbers and anti-roll bar. In the rear is a_ multi-link system with upper and tower later arms, coil springs, twin-tube-type gas pressure shocks and an anti- roll bar. The 318is also has a com- paratively long 2700 mm (106- inch) wheelbase, contributing to a smoother ride and more interior room, Extremely short braking distances are another highlight of the 218is. The intesior is well laid out, but not as attractive as many sports coupes. Rear legroom and headroom is adequate for two passengers. Outward visibility is very good. However, from the driver's seat, the tail is not visible, and this makes it difficult to judge how close the rear bumper is to the car behind you when parallel parking. The 318is offers many useful standard features that you won't find on most other sports coupes: a small tool kit in the trunk, an instant fuel economy readout, separate temperature controls for driver and passenger, and a filter in the ventilation system. And like most German automobiles, the 318is was designed with safety in mind. For impacts under 15 kph, the 318is hydraulic impact bumpers are designed to minimize serious damage. That’s one of the results of a recent study conducted by Friends for Life, a federally sponsored pilot project set up to help seniors make their lives healthier through establishing friendships. The survey revealed that men and women between the ages of 45-65 are deeply concerned about .the issue of social isolation and its connection to their health. Eighty per cert of those inter- viewed felt that people who are socially isolated would take longer to recover from an illness. A simi- lar percentage also agreed that people without friends were likely to have more health problems than those who have a wide range of social contacts. “When we began the project two years ago,’’ says project coordinator John Lynn, ‘‘we knew that social isolation was a serious problem for seniors, but we didn’t realize that the older generation identified it as one of J. NO PENALTY EARLY ® SETTLEMENT FLOATING OR FIXED © INTEREST RATES the major problems in their life, connecting it directly to the state of their physical health.”’ With the results of the survey, it is clear that a growing percentage of people understand how the real threat of isolation can be to one’s failing health. The Friends for Life project is now focussing on the specific ways that older people can connect with their com- munities. “We have already passed the toughest hurdle,’’ says Lynn, “which is to convince people that good social relationships are an important part of a_ healthy lifestyle. Now it’s a matter of in- forming people about the specific ways they can get involved.”’ Friends for Life has a speaker program to address groups in the Lower Mainland on how to effec- tively stay healthy through com- munication. The group has also established a free Friends Contact Line, which helps link people with organiza- tions and activities in the Lower Mainland where they can meet other people and become more involved in community activities. ~ For more information on Friends for Life, call 872-1230. 3 e FULL DISCLOSURE LEASE DOCUMENTS OPPORTUNITY TO LEASE ® USED VEHICLES .- VERY FLEXIBLE TERMS ® AND RESIDUALS & e CASH IN YOUR VEHICLE AND LEASE IT BACK : ee : S a) $47 1 /month® ‘92 FORD EXPLORER XL 4 de, 4X4, auto, A/C, racks * SER Mice $22,943 __*Based on 48 month “S271 /month* ‘92 ACURA INTEGRA RS 4 pa 5 48 Spd «Many options epsie price $14,752 pen ended lease with zero down Ou AL.
