Shooting Stars prepare for U-14 prov. finals Finish Metro League undefeated THE NORTH Shore Shooting Stars Girls U-14 Metro Soccer team took a giant step towards their ultimate goal of winning the Canadian National Cham- pionships in Calgary in Oc- tober when they defeated Surdel Challenge 2-1 on Sunday in the first round of the Provincial ‘‘A’’ Cup. North Shore had goals from Elizabeth Phillips and Kim Surine before Surdel countered in the late Stages, making for a very tense _ finish. Finishing an amazing season which has seen them win all 17 league games to wind up eight points ahead of their nearest rivals, Shooting Stars now prepare for the provincial finals later this month and a series of tourna- ments and exhibition games that will take them to Washington, Oregon and the Orange Bowl in Florida. In addition to winning the Metro League this season, they have won the Central Okanagan All-Star Tournament in Kelowna, the Richmond Thanksgiving Tournament, and the Far North Women’s Indoor Tournament at SFU. Team members include six girls who have been chosen to represent the B.C. Girls U-14 team. They are Laura Barton, Shannon Bow, Lindsay Clerkson, Kelly Donaldson, Andrea Leckie and Elizabeth Phillips. Other team members are Elizabeth Ayre, Maryn Ashdown, Tiauna Freeman, Lyndsay Irwin, Kelly Miller, Morgan Painter, Maelle Ricker, Kim Surine and Amanda Williams. The team is coached by Peter Phillips and Jack Clerkson and managed by John Miler. Four local bowling teams play in Special Olympics THE SPECIAL Olympics Sixth Annual Bowling Tournament was held March 25, with eight teams ‘participating; four from North Vancouver, three from Vancouver and one from Squamish. First place went to Squamish with +245 pins over average. Se- cond place went to Vancouver #3 with +205 pins over average. Female high single was Margaret Gillis from Vancouver #3 with +60 pins over average. Female high three was Doreen Kinkrod, Vancouver 43 with +89 pins over average. Male high single was Squamish’s Duane Horsman with +122 pins over average. And male high three was North Shore #4’s David Schmidt with +140 pins over average. North Shore teams placings were: North Shore #1, third; North Shore #2, eighth; North Shore #3, fifth and North Shore #4 sixth, Flicka gymnast defends title IT IS said that defending a title is one of the hardest things to do in sports, but Aparna Ray of North Van- couver’s Flicka Gym Club did just that at the B.C. Elite and Provincial A Championships held this past weekend at the Capilano College Sport- splex. Ray retained her title as the B.C. National Open Women's Champion. She won vault and finished se- cond on beam and floor. Jenny Campbell, also of Flicka, finished~ close behind in second place. She won bars and floor and was fifth on beam. Other Flicka National Open gymnasts that did well included Kristi Mardyn, who finished fourth with third on vault and floor and fourth on bars. Lisa Nakano was fifth. She won beam and was fifth on vault. Meredith Schachtcl was second on vault, Marlies Ernst was second on bars and fourth on floor and Melanie Vozza was fifth on beam. {t was a one-through-four sweep for Flicka National Novice gymnasts. Melanie Redlich was first. She won bars and beam and was fourth on vault and floor. Christine Woo was second. She won floor, was third on vault, fourth on beam and fifth on bars. Sabrina Horak was third. She was first on vault and third on bars and floor. Laura Mazur was fourth with a second on floor, tied for third with Horak on bars, was fifth on vault and sixth on beam. Flicka’s Julia Fleming won the Provincial A Midget title. She was first on bars and beam, second on vault and fifth on floor. Yuki Sudo was second all around with second on beam and fourth on bars and floor. Jennifer Tsakok was third, with a first on floor and second on vauit and bars. Jennifer Clarke was fifth, win- ning vault and floor and third on beam. Blythe Hartley is the Provincial A Argo Champion. She won vault, bars and beam and was se- cond on floor. Lise Leveilie placed third. She was second on bars, third on floor and sixth on beam. Natalie Nelson tied Hartley for first on beam and was fifth on floor. Daphne O’Young won Provin- cial A Tyro. She was first on vault, and second on bars, beam and floor. Raiia Gutman placed sccond. She won bars, was fourth on floor, fifth on beam and sixth on vault, Marie Shimizu placed fourth all around. She was third on vault and beam, fourth on bars and sixth on floor. Patti Furniss placed second all around in Provincial A Open. She won vault, was second on bars, fourth on beam and fifth on floor. At 23, she was the oldest competitor at the championships. Next major competition for most of Flicka’s national-level gymnasts will be the Western Ca- nadian Championships, which will be held in Winnipeg from April 24 to 26.
