Sorry LAST WEEK your man Doug declared there was no such thing as a depression or recession. His confident statement was based on the fact that we are still throwing money away like drunk- en thieves. And now there is fur- ther evidence. I refer to the free lunch pro- gram for so-called hungry kids, and no doubt you saw the TV shots of ever-smilin’?’ Mikey pushing the first free lunch wagons into that Surrey school. Like all free lunches, this one costs something. Seven million bucks. But that’s only the start. As with bilingualism, multicult, affirmative action and all the other pet projects of the Left, it will expand exponentially, as the professors say. “*Hungry kids” is a shibboleth designed to hold monsters at bay. Thus no one contests it and the media lap it up, being suckers for any socialist slogan. Motherhood may be out of fashion, but not hungry kids. Who could not be for feeding them? I could. Because as the villainous Bill Vander Zalm put it: when he refused to march down the road with the sillies, feeding children is a parental responsibili- ty. Or should be. Doug Collins a a E ON THE OTHER HAND Schools are for education, not free-lunch cafeterias. And if the kids are indeed hungry then they should be taken away from their parents, who cannot be fit to have children. Vander Zalm pointed out that when he was a child in Holland during the war, food was in very short supply. Yet he never weni hungry. The adults might have got a bit thinner, but the kids came first. Their mothers saw to that. Are today’s Canadian payents not up to that standard? That de- pends, as you will see, on who the parents are. ‘ There’s no point in going on about ail this to the nincompoops who have finally got their way, naturally. And they won’t stop at free lunches. We can expect to see free breakfasts and free dinners, too. And why stop there? How about free beds? There is no limit to the con- tradictions of liberal theology. If there were, we wouldn’t have free lunches plus a massive social assistance program. The social services budget for the current financial year, the department tells me, is nearly $2 billion. Which doesn’t include the cost of the minister’s office. To be exact, it is $1.983 billion. And that was set up under the hard-hearted, no-free-lunch Socreds. About $1.36 billion goes on direct welfare payments. A further $36.5 million goes on medicare, dental assistance and drugs for welfare recipients. The welfare total, therefore, is $1.73 billion, give a half million or so. And now we can add $7 million to that. Ten years ago the social assistance program cost $400 mit- lion. So, allowing for. inflation and the increase in population, we are now spending near!y three times as much on the program now as we did then. Why? Not because of any recession but because, in good Capilano Rugby Club receives grant THE CAPILANO Rugby Club has received the $78,555 second payment of a $235,666 GO B.C. grant to help the club upgrade its facilities at Klahanie Park in West Van- couver. Government Services Minister Lois Boone, the minister responsible for GO B.C., said the project involves upgrading Klahanie Park to a first-class facility where inter- provincial and_ interaational ‘rugby matches can b: held. “The project is well under way. Work at the site is more than half complete,’’ said Boone. ‘The facility will be availabie to the general public for many field activities, tour- naments and meetings. Wednesday, January 22, 1992 — North Shore News ~ 9 times and bad, the pressure for ‘*more’’ has never ceased. The free lunch is part of that process. Nincompoops claim they can already detect that the brain- power of the disadvantaged has been boosted. What a pity their brainpower hasn’t been boosted. There is something else, if I may make so bold. . The Third World is occupying the classrooms of much of the Lower Mainland. That is clear both from statistics and the pic- tures on TV. Hardly a white face in sight. Which should tell you something about why we have to have free lunches. But no one wants to say it. They can’t believe their luck, these newcomers. All this and free lunches, too! Where they came from, they never dreamed of such bonanzas. No wonder we have lost control of our borders. We qualify as the dumbest country in Christendom — or Mikey, there is no free lunch what used to be Christendom. It gets worse. Mikey’s free lun- ches are but a drop in the bucket. The latest ploy by the federal socialists, who if anything are even imore stupid than the provin- cial socialists, is to throw another $200 million at immigrants and phoney refugees for ianguage training. Which boosts that total to $300 million. We import the illiterate and send them to school. The parents as well as the kids. For they don’t fit into the structure. Will the begetters of the kids getting free lunches get free lun- ches too? Wouldn’t surprise me. Believe it or not, Ottawa now in- tends to provide free babysitting for.‘‘visible minorities’’ so that they will be able to get to class. Free lunches. Free babysitting. Vote for me. ‘ It’s time for the revolution, comrades. And as I was saying, there’s no recession or depression. Fiave I ever lied to you? GRANT M.
