20 — Sunday, August 18, 1991 — North Shore News BUSINESS BRIEFS LEARNING CENTRE IF A student is doing poor in school, that is not necessarily the sizn of a tearning disability, ae- cording to Adrian Parker, the director of the North Shore Sylvan Learning Centre. She says the student simply needs to devel- op better study skills. Parker adds that study skills can be acquired by almost any student who reads at grade level and in many cases study skills are the key that turns a mediocre stu- dent into an outstanding student. “*Good study skills can enable a child to develop a self discipline that is so critical to achieving goals and overcoming setbacks,"’ says Parker. ‘‘Parents can play a pivotal role in helping kids devel- op them,”’ Parker says parental invoive- ment in a child’s academic plan is vital, The study skills Parker talks about include those of listening, how to take notes and how to compile outlines. Parker says the Sylvan study process teaches stu- dents to pre-read, skim, scan and allow for active reading and learn- ing. She adds that good study skills. including time management tech- niques, set the stage for success in school and that academic success sets the stage for a successful future in post secondary education and the working world. “Kids who have control of their time also have contral of their lives,*’ said Parker. Currently, there ure about 1,400 golf courses in’ Canada and) the game's increasing popularity hits sparked plans to develop 63 new courses in B.C. and Alberta alone over the next three years. Those figures might provoke images of unbroken expanses of sOTt ereen grass; grass that will be walked on, divetted out and driv- en over by thousands of golfers. Greens are usually created and matatained by hand-seeding. But this method is slow, produces uneven results and can be short- circuited by rain, birds and in- sects. Now B.C. entrepreneur Whitney Evans has an alternative. Turf Lite is an innovative light-weight grass turf growing in a nutrient- rich, chemical free, biodegradable Paper matrix. He was recently given a $36,250 loan from the Western Economic Diversification Fund to help de- velop the product. “Em delighted to see that Mr. Evans and his partner, John Oswald, are going ahead with the first Turf Lite licensee operation. This is an idea with great growth potential,’’ said Surrey-White Rock MP Benno Friesen. Total costs of establishing the prototype demonstration facility are estimated a1 $72,500. “This is the boost we needed to begin marketing Turf Lite throughout the Pacific Nor- thwest,"” said Evans. He developed the product with the help of @ local paper com- pany, Merfin Hygienic Products Inc. Golf course owners who have tested Turf Lite report that it takes hold quickly, grows well and stands up to mowing, drying and traffic. “Photo submitted ADRIAN PARKER of the Syivan Learning Centre.
