Yiooked on theatre from an ear- ty age, Mason is founder and im- presario of North Vancouver’s Theatricks children’s drama group, which will be performing soon in the Capilano and Lynn Valley libraries, A resident of North Vancouver since 1973, Mason created Theatricks in 1987 as a way to in- troduce improvisational theatre to children, her own included. The first classes were held in a church hall, but Mason has now created a theatre studio in the basement of her home on East Carisbrooke, Sessions are informal and rely on the children’s own creativity. Stage exercises and theatre sports are used to help the young actors relax and feel comfortable in their roles. There are no lines to be learned — or forgotten. Mascn and the children discuss the story, talk about the characters and plan the action, but the dialogue comes from the children themselves. Mason is currently working with four groups of children, ranging in age from three to 14. During the Christmas season, the two older groups will present plays at both the Lynn Valley and Capilano branches of North Van- couver District Library, and at other locations on the North Shore. The older group will present their version of A Special Christmas, an excerpt from the classic novel Little Women, and the younger group has chosen to bring to life Robin Hood and his Merry Men.
