A new Legacy Project Commit- {ee was appointed at Monday's West Vancouver District Council meeting to continue the proposed arts facilityfoutdoor bandshell at Ambleside Park that was to be the 75th Anniversary Committce’s bir- thday gift to the municipality. “I'm bitterly disappointed,” said Ambleside and Dundarave Ratepayers spokesman Capt. George Murrell of the resurrected bandshell concept. The original committee secured council’s approval for the concept during West Vancouver's 1987 an- niversary year despite protests from various local residents con- cerned about the noise generated by outdour performances and con- certs at Ambleside Park. But the committee was not able to raise all the funding necessary to begin the project by the end of the year. Because the original committee has since concluded its affairs, the matier was referred to the newly appointed committee, which is “sired by Barrie Sutton. Murrell said the money for the anniversary project should go towards a new running track at West Vancouver Senior Secondary. “Our legacy is our young peo- B dave’s | body - “gin : I. 49856 LTD. : B shop FREE U-DRIVE 1431 Clyde Avo. Boname said that the proposed running track was) within the jurisdiction of the West Vancouver School District. “They get very upset if we med- dle with their property.’’ said Boname. Ald. Mark Sager said the scope of the new legacy project commit- tee should include alternatives for improving the park, ‘‘perhaps something on a more modest scale." 'T, too, think we should broaden the scope of the project,” added Ald. Alex Brokenshire. ‘But something must be done in Ambleside Park to clean it up.’ The new committee will review the cultural and economic implica- tions of the iegacy project, develop a program to build community in- terest and support, put together a fund-raising program and a con- struction schedule. Transit’ s head of- fice. “In North Vancouver, sick leave is not causing the shortage of buses,’ sald Independent Ca- nadian Transit Union vice-presi- dent Eric Scott. In a Sept. 9 News story chronicling the temporary cancellation of the UBC bus ros, B.C. Transit spokesman Diane Gendron said staff absenteeism was running at 16 to 17 per cent, whick was double the normal rate. “Short jobs”” bus routes that don’t continue throughout the day, she said, had therefore to be canceled. But Scott said there were two drivers sitting in the North Van- couver depot fast Friday without buses to drive. “There are 19 buses in the yard there in need of repair, and for some tine the mechanics have not been allowed to werk over- time (to fix them,’’ Scott added.
